xbox 360 question

Paging all xbox 360 users out there.

I'm very much of a newbie when it comes to consoles as I've been an proud and loyal PC patriot. After all these years however I got tired of the crap one has to put up when maintaining a usable gaming machine (drivers, upgrades, etc..) so I chickened out and decided to get myself an xbox. Now I have the following questions:

1. Provided I want to buy it here in Switzerland, do I need to specifically get one with english language support, or do all of them come with it (just needs to be configured)?
2. Is it possible to stream media (music and video) to it from a PC running Vista Ultimate (I've read conflicting info about this)?
3. Can it play media from a NAS?
4. Do I have to be a squeeky voiced 12 year old to play anything on it? (Sorry I had to).

Thanks heaps for any good soul who can answer these burning questions.

Re: xbox 360 question

i am a sqeaky voiced 34 year old and quite happy to play games on my 360.

language support for the console is included, but some games bought in switzerland are german only.

regards vista and NAS i cannot advise, as i am a mac user.

if you like to play online, xbox live is really great for that, although it does cost something.

Re: xbox 360 question

Sorry to butt in, but get a PS3 for your needs. It's quieter, less likely to break down, and supports PnP, allowing you to stream pretty much anything your windows machine wants to spew.

I've been a loyal fan of consoles since I too got fed up of the endless upgrades required to run a windows game machine, I am no longer squeaky voiced, but there are plenty of games for me to enjoy.

Re: xbox 360 question

As for language, most games nowadays are multi-lingual, but EA has decided to remove the english language from games sold in Europe. Even though the modern formats have the room, especialy on Blu-ray, those cretins decided it was a good idea to remove an option. Sorry, pet hate there.

The thing is that I plan to play mostly on the Internets and the PSNET is by far not as mature as Xbox Live yet. I must say that I'm very tempted by the PS3 though (and will eventually break down I think).

Re: xbox 360 question

i have both ps3 and xbox 360.

for games and internet gaming, i see the xbox as the clear winner.

for streaming both are perfectly capable but the noisiness of the xbox puts you off using it for that purpose.

my major gripe with xbox is fan noise but you dont tend to notice it that much during gaming.

blu ray is a very nice by-product of picking up a ps3.

you are very much correct in your diagnosis about maturity of xbox live.

i broke down too eventually.

Whatever the xBox live has, I'm not missing it, and I wonder what everyone goes on about, maybe I'm a fanboy. PS has games, they play online, never had a problem.

However, I hear xBox live is deluged by foul mouthed squeaky teens, better spend the cash and keep 'em out.

PS3... XBox... let's come to a compromise and advise him to get a WII.

not in my experience. when you first set up your profile you can specify what kind of gamer you are and this tends to put you in the room with like minded people.

I have no clue what a NAS is but I use a 8 GB stick as media for my XBOX360. It can play .avi files directly from the stick which I think is great

Re: xbox 360 question

With the XBox, you get a load of fantastic games and the graphics are excellent. The is nothing more fun than a load of mates all over the world playing against each other.

Media streaming works fine between Vista and XBox, Vista Media Centre on the XBox is excellent. Also most of the games can pick up your network based music collection, so playing the driving games listening to you fav music is great.

However the noise and heat this thing makes is a joke. PS3 is so quiet like the Wii, but somehow MS decided that a leaf blower for a games machine is a good idea

Only a couple of weeks ago did my XBox fail, but MS picked it up and are sending me a new one even though it is 2 years since I bought it (and in the UK). I doubt Sony would be this good as I remember the trouble with the lasers going on the PS2 and Sony not extending the warranty like MS have to (up to 3 years)!

Re: xbox 360 question

microsoft did indeed step up to the plate and for those who bought their machine a few years ago, extended the warranty from one to three years.

its true, mind failed in the first year as well, but microsoft did a good job of picking it up, and replacing it.

Re: xbox 360 question

Musn't.... start.... a.... flame.... war...

But it's not like MS had a choice in extending the warranty, with a reported failure rate of 30% (to be fair, MS quotes 5%), but still, at least it get replaced for free. A minus spun into a positive.

I do often think of buying the xBox though, but only for Halo and C&C (which I love).

Thanks everyone for the clarifications.

As a last thing: anyone wreaking havoc in Liberty City lately (GTA 4)? There is something magical in stealing a firetruck and mopping the floor with people caught in the water cannon jet.

This is pure speculation on my part, so dont be upset with me. I think when you include a language in a game, you usually have to pay royalties to the person who does the voice work. Sometimes its a flat fee for voice work, but I can imagine for a game where there may be celebrities lending their voice that they get paid royalties on games sold that have their voice. (i.e GTA IV, Madden, etc)

So if they are selling a game where the vast majority of people will not use a feature that costs the developers money, they wont include it. Its smart business
I can see this being true, but for the fact that most games have English as the original language (at least, I assume so, I guess many could be japanase, or outsourced to who knows where), so actors would already have been paid, the company is now merely depriving players of the orginal language of the game.

Think about it, does Metal Gear Solid come with a Japaneese language option when it is imported into the US? The original language is not English
Don't know, but it's sold with English in Europe, I bought mine from the local shop, and Konami didn't deem it necessary to remove the english language, and that's a ton of dialogue. But I'm intrigued now, I might see if it does have japanese, the story make little sense to me anyway, so it probably wouldn't matter if I can't understand it.

The language option is determined by the setup of the console, which is why you're never prompted.

Edit:

I'm not trying to cause an argument, it's just baffling that only EA do this, when it seems all the other publishers are happy to leave English in there. I tried writing to them, but they didn't give me much of an answer, one day I'll get to the bottom of it.

Re: xbox 360 question

My Swiss version of Halo 3 didn't have an English voice option, only German, which made it more fun anyway?
I read somewhere it was because they couldn’t fit all the different regional voice files onto one game DVD

amazingly, you have actually hit on possibly the only game where there probably IS a hidden japanese version on the disc somewhere. if memory serves i read about that either for MGS or at least the previous metal gear game.

not all. several publishers produce a german only version.

most likely it is because xbox is still dvd based rather than higer def format like ps3, and it is an issue with room.

Re: xbox 360 question

Alrighty, the deed is done and the box is sitting next to my flat panel. Getting media streaming to work was rather easy, but alas it cannot talk to my NAS directly. I still managed to hook it up indirectly through the vista machine.

So, anyone up for some GTA 4 multiplayer goodness?
