Delivery time for Salt/Init7 equipment

Hi,

We are arriving in Zurich on April 1, and would like to have internet set up ASAP once we arrive. Init7 says it can take up to 4-6 weeks to set up, and Salt requires a number on the fiber plug to start the process (which we won't have until we get into the apartment).

Does anyone know how long it takes for the equipment to be mailed and for the service to be set up upon arrival? Or is there any other way to set up fiber from abroad, before we arrive?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Init7 does not require you to use their hardware - with their "Fiber7" option, you have the choice to not pay for a router and instead provide a your own stuff, including an SFP module, router, and media converter if the router doesn't have an SFP cage.

That doesn't fully answer the question though. My guess is that installation is faster if there is already an OTO (fiber plug) in your particular apartment. They consider the building 'fiber available' once fiber comes into the building, but then sometimes need to call out an electrician to pull and install the OTO the first time each apartment signs up for fiber - this requires access to the apartment, of course. On the other hand, sometimes they do go through the trouble of troubling all the tenants for access and pulling all the fiber up front.

I'm about to sign up with Init7 for my new flat, so I've been sorting through it all, but don't yet have anecdotal evidence of how long it actually takes on their end.

Salt setup duration has been described by users to lay between 1-8 weeks. Best chances to get a fast start, based on the posts about the topic, is if there is no current other provider servicing that apartment, so to say there is a ground zero to build up upon and there is no switch to execute.
Salt also relies entirely on renting the fibre that has been laid down by the local electric company (=EWZ), while init7 sometimes lays down own fibres, so probably also here advantage salt.

Anyway to book either salt or init7 you must be sure there is fiber in the apartment with the OTO fiber plug already installed. This OTO plug has a number on it, should be known to the landlord. https://www.sunrise.ch/content/sunri...-1600x1200.jpg

And either your apartment has already been connected with fiber completely up to the OTO plug, or not at all. AFAIK there is no variety in between, so IMO the suggestion above "just to call an electrician" is wrong/not feasible.

Unless there is an OTO box already installed then you have a 1-2 week lead time to get that installed, after it's installed then there is another 7 - 10 days before the line is activated.

That's based on when we moved into apartment in Bern, with a bit of management you can arrange for the OTO box to be installed the within a day or so of taking possession just needs a bit of negotiating.

We signed up with Salt, got our equipment within the week, plugged it in and it worked right away. Even amazed me that it went like that.

When they installed fiber in my previous flat, it was marked as being available at my address, in Init7's system, once Swisscom had the box in the basement installed and ready to go.

However, at that point, there was still no OTO in my flat. They would have needed to send out somebody to pull the fiber through the walls into the flat, and I would have needed to provide access for that to happen.

In my current flat, it was more proactive. The landlord wanted to get all the OTOs installed in one go, and there was a day when they asked everybody to be around to provide access. Then the contractor involved could only handle half the job, so they made the request again, and again. Overall, I'm not entirely sure which approach I prefer.

I hope that I didn't write anything that could be interpreted as 'just call an electrician'. Rather, sometimes fiber is 'available', but some cable pulling will need to be done by an electrician or similar, and the time for this is going to be factored into their general lead-time advice.

Yes you're right. I recalled it wrongly. Revisiting my notes, also here on my fiber connection, city of Zurich, fiber was already provided into the building, but not to each apartment. Only at my order for a fiber abonnement, I think I was the first in the house with 6 apartments, EWZ people came to install the fiber up to the apartment. Not anymore sure if they installed it also in the other 5 apartments in the same run.
I noted 13 days for me between installation of the OTO plug and final activation of the line.

EWZ (mostly the owner of the fibre) in Zürich promises up to 10 days installation duration if the OTO plug is already installed, and up to 20 days, if the OTO plug still has to be installed.
