Help, I'm confused.com!!

Hello all,
Hopefully someone here will be able to help.
I now live back in the UK but my sister-in-law lives in Zurich.

The lady is looking to get a laptop and TV (which to date she has never had) and asked me for advice.
Naturally, those of you who know the UK will know that this is such a simple thing to do - buy a Wi-Fi modem (e.g. Belkin), order Wi-Fi, get a splitter, attach one end to the phone cable and plug the telephone into the relevant out-socket and the cable to the Wi-Fi modem to the other. Plug in the Modem, switch on, link your laptop/phone/TV/printer . . .. job done.

Now it appears that such things are not so easy in Switzerland and Zurich especially it seems. My sister-in-law has been told all sorts of stories about needing all sorts of different connections and equipment as "probably nothing will connect" as it's all this 'Glasfaser' in her appartment. She has a huge 'cupboard' in the appartment with all sorts of strange stuff inside but it seems that any modem she wants won't fit inside etc. etc. etc.

I'm at the end of my tether as I cannot see how anything so simple is apparantly being made so, so complicated.

Has anyone any tips/advice/ help please.

Many thanks
John

Re: Help, I'm confused.com!!

Upc has an offering for phone, internet, TV so she could get it all sorted out with one provider.

They offer their site in English as well so you can have a look from the UK: https://www.upc.ch/en/

I recommend checking availability first (it is cable so you can only get it if they have their cables close to you).

And if your sister in law is not able to understand this all on her own (seems that way, especially if this is the first time she is going to have a laptop and tv) then just book the installation with them as well. It will cost something extra but I guess this will be well spent..

The OP said the lady has Glasfaser at home, which is a fiber connection. If FTTH is already available would I never go with some much slower cable instead…

Well, if it's all Glasfaser in her apartment, then fiberglass she should go for.

If she wants it quick and easy, Swisscom would be a choice (she doesn't seem to have the patience/knowledge to go shopping for cheapest).

They give you modems now which do wifi, so it is really darn easy - you plug the modem in and follow their dau-step-by-step-advice.

If nobody in the flat has ever used the fiberglass before, it needs to be connected to the flat - which Swisscom (for example, but others too) will do for her. Usually for free.

It is actually very simple here.

Step 1.

She needs to know who is her current network provider (not internet, but who connects her to the network). If she has no clue she can ask the landlord (just assuming that she is renting, else she has to look for marks on the equipment or her own bookkeeping)

Step 2.

Find out which internet/TV/phone providers can deliver on her network.

Step 3.

Compare offers and get a contract.

Step 4. (assuming network is already all set-up inside apartment)

Receive box, and follow clear and easy instructions.

Done.

Depends on her situation, some landlords do this for the whole building regardless of anybody signing up or not. In our case the landlord arranged for every apartment to be connected the moment they put the new cables in the street. We really had to do nothing for this.

Every provider has all in one packages, UPC just happens to be one of the most expensive ones.

She lives in Zürich,

First fill in her address here and see if she is connected on Zürinet:

Nice that you are willing to pay up more than double to have a higher rated customer service, I'm not.

Just call salt - they'll sort it out.

49 chuffs a month, and you have a 10gig synchronous line, and wireless modem and it just works...

Glassfibre is more of a marketing tool than anything else. I‘m on copper with UPC at 500Mbps...

Higher speeds is not just about marketing, they also serve a practical advantage to those who have higher usage of their connection.

I would have to restrict my downloadspeeds when grabbing a movie while my wife is working on the laptop and our son is on the console, and to avoid the boy being bounced out of a game she also has to restrict her speeds.

It is not just marketing. Now with 10gb/ps which even tho we never ever maxed it out (yet), we just don't have to care anymore for any of such.

Given your described usage you wouldn't max a 100mbps link either...

Download a movie (vs streaming), in 4k is easily 50GB...

Good luck on a crappy 100mbps link...

Not to mention that most consumer copper links tend to be asymetric - so for your 100mbps down, you usually only get 10mbps up or so...

Hi all

Just wanted to say many thanks to you all who have taken time to respond to my query. Much appreciated.

So now, I'm sitting back and looking forward to mid-May when I'll be back in the sunny Schweiz enjoying a few beers, bratwurst and cervelats!!
