Installing region-locked Android apps without a local CC

Sorry, this question is at the intersection of banking and telephone, and I just figured it made slightly more sense here.

I just realized I may not be able to get a Swiss credit card with PostFinance. I have a printout of a photo of a check a friend in the US received for me, that I wanted to try to mobile deposit into my PF account (I assume they have mobile deposit of checks like is available in the US). But I tried installing the PF Android app and I can't because it is region-locked to CH, and my Google Play account won't let me switch to CH unless I have a local payment method saved. Since my PF cash card does not function like a CC, what are my options? I guess PF may have a "Debit Card" type option, that functions like a CC, that I can request? Is there any way to just get the PF app installed without getting Google Play to recognize my residence here?

Re: Installing region-locked Android apps without a local CC

I just found an option in my PostFinance online account for "Buy electronic credits from a range of providers directly in e-finance and receive redemption codes," and the Google Play logo was in the icon for it. It takes 24 hours to activate, but I will give it a try after that.

It might still make sense for me to get a Debit Card from PF if they offer that, so I can make online purchases. I'm still using my US CC for that, which I've been paying off with savings that I still have sitting in the US.

Welcome to Europe. The region without checks

It will be quite expensive trying to clear a check here.

Re: Installing region-locked Android apps without a local CC

Separating the two issues here - the Google play store does indeed restrict apps based on your current location, which is a right PITA, but thankfully there are alternatives like Aptoide that do not.

Having said that, I've never felt the need to install the postfinance app at all, I just use their website and it allows me to do everything I need.

I very much doubt, however, that you'll be able to deposit your US cheque online. No idea how it works there, but in CH nobody has used chequebooks for twenty years or more, so the only way your going to be able to deposit it is by physically getting it to your bank, either in person or by post.

Edit: the normal postfinance card doesn't use Visa or MasterCard, so is only accepted in a few places outside Switzerland, and not generally any good for online purchases. More info here.

Awesome! I will try out Aptoide, just to make sure if in future I want to install a region locked app, that I will be able to. It's always nice to break outside of the google jail in anyway possible, even if I don't use it much.

Re: the check I've already given up and will just deposit it in my US account, and then at some point I will probably transfer all my US money here.

The normal postfinance card is a Visa Plus card and as such is accepted at 99% of all ATMs in Europe at least (it even worked when I tried it in Georgia and Vietnam)

Yes, you must bring or send it to the bank, and they will charge CHF 50 or so, and take about four weeks to clear.

I just deposited a check at UBS last week, will post the final charge and time once it's cleared, but those are the numbers I recall from the last time I did so.

Not sure about the 99%, probably more like 50% in my experience, which from memory includes at least France, Greece and Turkey. But the Plus network is just for ATMs, not for use as debit card for online use as the OP was hoping. It's certainly not in any way linked or compatible with VISA , inside or outside CH.

As is well explained in the other threads I linked to.

Use your US bank mobile depost function and then use Transferwise (or another cheap currency conversion site) to transfer the money to your CH account.

Unless the check is for a very large amount the fee is likely to be much less than 50 CHF. For instance, to convert $5,000 to CHF the fee is around $25.
