Swisscom video call for ID verification... ugh...

Have any of you guys experienced this new procedure from Swisscom where when you create a new mobile contract they do a video call with you to check your identity? I had 30 mins of my life wasted today having 3 separate and unsuccessful calls.

What you have to do during the video call is switch to the rear camera of your phone and go as close to the passport as possible in order for them to get the perfect screenshot of you and your details. However, the problems with this are:
  1. British passports, especially the new ones, are very reflective. This meant I could not get one single shot they were happy with. I spent ages closing blinds, fiddling with the room lights etc etc.
  2. The screens they are doing all of this on appear to have terrible quality which means even they have trouble getting the right shot.
  3. The first two agents I had insisted that this was the only way of verifying identity and a contract was not otherwise possible.
  4. It is actually super weird to have a video call in this way in your home, it almost feels like an invasion of privacy. Intrusive, even.

After my blood pressure slowly building up to boiling point I finally spoke to someone who said I could send a scan of the passport to them instead. Why they would implement a system that sucks this much and force everyone to go through it I will never know. That is has such a problem with shiny ID documents is also ridiculous, as most are glossy and laminated.

I am generally a patient man but for some reason this process really did cause a lot of frustration.

Any of you guys had to do it yet?

So..if you have no contract with Swisscom, do you have to make said call on Salt?

Should have done it sat on the bog. They would have resolved the issues in double quick time.

This is the correct answer. Preferably while straining.

I do hope that is only a very small proportion of your remaining days. Be careful about the blood pressure though.
Fortunately for me at the moment, I can't simply wander down to the Swisscom shop and sort all that stuff out. In the future, as we more closely follow the Chinese social credits scoring model, we'll all be forced through such procedures or we won't even be able to buy a bus ticket.
