chromecast regional block?

Hello,

I have read some potentially old or wrong information that using chromecast results in a regional block on US Netflix and similar, which is in effect even if a VPN is used. Can anyone confirm or deny that, or share a solution?

At the moment I simply plug in an HDMI cable directly and it works fine, but I would like to avoid messing with this cable. Maybe there is even an alternative device which is more appropriate and less fancy.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Re: chromecast regional block?

I used to watch "now TV" from the UK on my old iPhone using a VPN, then I would cast it to the TV. No problems.

I don't see how the cast has anything to do with it, it's the source of your material that counts. If you're streaming US Netflix on your phone or whatever device with a VPN and then cast it to your TV you should be ok.

But if you want to be sure get trial accounts and try it out.

Re: chromecast regional block?

As far as I can understand from further reading, the problem can arise because the laptop is connected to a VPN, but the router itself isn't. The chromecast connects to the router directly, so Netflix can still identify the ruse and block it. It seems possible to get routers on a VPN (depends on router type etc) but I want to avoid that route (pun intended) for many reasons.

Most people just run Netflix directly on chromecast it seems, in which case there's no reasonable workaround that I've found. However, supposedly running Netflix in a chrome tab on a laptop and casting the tab does work.

I have not verified any of this with experience. It does seem, however, that other devices have even more problems (or are very expensive).

So it seems I'll try to buy a chromecast and try it, and return it if it doesn't work.

Re: chromecast regional block?

Netflix US has long since ceased to work via VPNs on several non-branded android devices I use, as have nearly all foreign online TV services (e.g. BBC iPlayer etc.). The apps have got clever and now use more than just the apparent IP to geolocate.

I haven't found any way around this, which is why I keep the overpriced Swisscom TV subscription instead. This also works via the app from non-Swiss IPs for replay and recordings, just not for 'live' TV.

Re: chromecast regional block?

Yes I have heard is getting more challenging to use a VPN, but it is certainly still possible, just depends on which VPN and how you access it. Mine works fine. It seems to me that with paid VPN services there is still a chance, but not something I have tried nor am I interested in trying.

The question remains... after the VPN works in principle, how best to use it with chromecast. If anyone has first-hand experience, I am still interested.

Re: chromecast regional block?

Netflix is very actively blocking IP's used by VPN services, so you would need a VPN provider that often add's new ip's/servers to stay ahead of the game, and even than it might be needed to switch servers on your VPN provider every now and then (yes, even possible during a movie) since some will be blocked while others ain't.

Have your chromecast connect to a router (can be virtual on your laptop) which runs the VPN since the chromecast itself does not support VPN and lacks DNS for media streaming. Than plug in your chrome cast to the telly and that is all there is to it.

Re: chromecast regional block?

Im still doing OK with Netflix US using a smart DNS (smartdnsproxy) on windows devices, with the DNS servers just set as primary and secondary DNS on my router.

With the Smart TV or Firestick that is less successful as I guess they have hard coded their own DNS servers. Even with a DNS redirect set on the router.

Set up a virtual router on your window device and have the chromecast connect to that. That's all.

DNS Filter works perfectly.
