SKY TV problems / service interruption

For those using a SKY subscription in Switzerland, Is anybody having problems with their SKY TV programmes at the moment?

Since last Sunday 11 August some of the services and channels which we always had access to are no longer available, for example:
1. Previously recorded programmes are not available, they are there but will not play.
2. Sky sports channels, movie channel no longer available.
3. Basically the free channels (news ect…) are still available.

After reporting this to our local agent who provides the skybox and subscription, he came and fetched the box to check it out thinking there was a problem with the box itself. Now it turns out he says that Sky have “switched off” some services to thousands of customers in Europe and at the moment he does not know when normal service will be returned.

Are SKY implementing some sort of early BREXIT policy

Thanks for sharing your experience / advice on this issue

Re: SKY TV problems / service interruption

Can't find any supporting info, but it's most likely they've moved some channels to a different satelite/beam that doesn't have good enough coverage for your dish size. They did this with some channels a few years back, at which point I needed to use a bigger dish at our house in Alsace.

The sad thing is that there's nothing you can do, as you're effectively using a 3rd party service to get round the legal broadcasting rights that disallow non-UK users from viewing those channels. We used a friend's UK address to do so for some years, but I've completely given up on satellite TV now.

I do have a 90cm dish and 4-way LNB going spare it you're interested, but you'd need to come and get it off our roof.

Re: SKY TV problems / service interruption

sky have been narrowing their beams for a while so people in europe can't pick it up, sometimes they go overboard and kill everything other times not so much, all you can do is get a bigger dish we're upto 90cm now, we lose a few channels in the evening, and some HD versions of the channels don't work now.

Thanks for the replies so far.

We already have a big dish 90cm and the signal strength has not changed...I've checked it.

Its not a signal problem, programmes that have been recorded months ago on the hard drive are not available, if you try to record a programme that is available (for example Sky news) it also does not work. I can't recall exactly what the message is that appears when you try record or watch certain channels, something along the lines of the service not being available.

Our local Sat service guys also said that the box itself is ok, its Sky who are switching services off.... he says.

Since Monday, he took the box and left a loaner.
Same issue with the loaner.

Re: SKY TV problems / service interruption

We also had SKY via a UK address, but gave up some years ago. It really depends on what you want to watch. If it's the regular BBC/ITV channels, then you have them all on Swisscom (and likely other providers). You can also get a service called "Zattoo" which gives those channels and is available also via the Hub on a smart TV.

There's also Freesat which again has all the free to air UK channels, will work with your existing setup, you just swap out the Sky box, can record, has HD etc etc. and so far that works fine with me as I only use it in my office for Sky news, CNBC and Bloomberg and only because I have still the dish, Freesat box and cabling into the house.

For movies you have Netflix and Prime, but I must admit the offering from SKY movies is much better. Finally, if you're into Rugby or Cricket, forget it, unless it's on one of the free to air channels. 6 nations you can watch via French or Italian TV, but of course the commentary is not in English. Basically if you're into the IPL, Ashes or Rugby internationals, you're stuffed!!!

Thanks for the tips, I do use Zatoo on occasion and we do have a lot of the local service typical English programs

Yep, for me its mostly for the sport with original English commentary, rugby, cricket, golf, cycling, motocross, formula 1, etc....
My SOH watches and records lots of the English cooking type programs (All the different countries master chef series for example)

Damn thing is still not working, apparently we need a new card along with 1000's of others with the same problem and no one knows how long its going to take. So far I've found one other person in our close network who has the same problem with their Sky, for all the others its still working normally

28 days to the Rugby WC... here's to hoping that's enough time

I was going to say it sounds like a card/subscription problem. How does it work here? Do you get a UK card with dodgy credentials or is it a bonefide european card? ( if such things exist)

I have freesat and nothing has changed for a very long time in terms of which sats the channels are on.

Re: SKY TV problems / service interruption

Hi,
I remember reading somewhere that an American company bought SKY. There is now a new channel named AMC and it's a U.S. channel but one needs a BT subscription to watch it.

I had all channels until today. Today mostly nothing that doesn't continuously rerun NCIS.... Sky News is even gone and that's ridiculous... BBC news - gone.. quite a few channels with BT..... which has me wondering about that.

My SKY provider is in Geneva and was a bit lacking in giving out information.
There is Sky.ch and it has dual tone - therefore if a series like the ubiquitous NCIS is on it is in German but you can change the language to English, as an example. 14 days are free to test and I am doing that now.
Zattoo also has quite a few English channels. It's free.

Mine worked until today where as I mentioned earlier most are gone. SKY Atlantic too and for some reason that one always seemed different. UPC has it listed in their Sky package.

Zattoo.ch has a lot of channels like all the ITV and BBC. It's free.

I'm checking Sky.ch.

We are paying our subscription fee but have no channels?? I wonder if they will charge us.

Here we go again, at least we had a few years hassle free :-)

BBC News is FTA, unless there's another subscription related one which means you don't get it any more. Probably your dish has gone out of alignment or something.
Many TVs have satellite tuners in them so if you don't have a spare satellite receiver you might be able to use your TV for testing FTA channels.

I once tried to sell my old SKY TV box for next to nothing, rather than throw it away. I had a lot of people interested but none of them realised they also would need a satellite.

The good news is that the Rugby World Cup will be on ITV2. Swisscom carries this channel in their offering (and probably other providers do as well) so I'm very happy with that.

We did initially try the reboot process a few times and it made no difference.
Then the Sat service guy took our box and left a loaner ohne card...

Anyway, good news our sky box was returned today with a new card and everything works.... AND previously recorded programs are still available and working.

According our Sat service guy, SKY UK randomly switched off 5000 accounts on Friday 9 August.... whether it was for piracy purposes or a mistake remains unknown. He did say that SKY UK service is not as good as Swiss service.... I'm thinking he meant their customer service.
