Wow - did I get lucky!

Maybe not much good to anyone else, unless Coop have any more, but I was dragged kickin' and screaming to the Seedamm Center Coop very early last Saturday morning. We thought if we got there early it'd be quiet, but no, all Switzerland had a similar thought.

As we cleared the checkout with all the Christmas essentials piled high, I asked my wife if she'd drunk all the Whisky in my absence on business that week. Of course the answer was "Ja Liebling, du hast Recht" (standard marital reply) so we headed for the kiosk area where they sell ciggies, newspapers and for reasons that have always escaped me, hard liquor.

There I noticed a cardboard box with a Sony video projector, marked down from SFr. 899 to SFr. 449. Curious, I looked around the box to try to see what the specs were and found another sticker "reduced from SFr. 1299 to SFr. 899". Now my interest was definitely piqued. It turned out to be a 800 x 600 3 LCD projector model VPL-ES3, well demonstrated but apparently OK. I handed over the cash, took it home and hooked it to my a/v amp and Sky+.

Wow! I now have a great 3 metre wide picture on the lounge wall. OK - it's not HD, but in "bang for the buck" terms it can't be beaten, especially paired with my DTS 7.1 sound system. The black levels are modest but the geometry and colour fidelity is very good.

Quite why Coop (food) supermarket had a well-used demo projector beats me, but it may be worth sniffing around other big Coops to see if there are any more.

And once I do upgrade to HD we can use it as a business projector.

It's not often one finds a real bargain in Switzerland, but this was certainly "right place, right time"!

Re: Wow - did I get lucky!

It's definately worthwhile to look around. I'm a frequenter of gadget shops and have picked up some great bargains in the last year including (but not only) a Sony Clié reduced by half price from Fr 800 to Fr 400, A HP digital camera reduced to clear from Fr 200 to Fr 30 each!! (I bought three as presents) and numerous other items.

It pays to check out the Restposten (Remaindered items) where the demo models and end of line stuff is carried or the Fundgrube (Treasure Trove) tables.

I am in the market for a new cell. My husband has some tip about Korean ones. My only concern is the price and the look/color! I guess I should check out that cell phone thread (errr....mobile phone thread!)
Guaranteed efficiency and user-friendliness - that'll do for me!

Re: Wow - did I get lucky!

Well Carrie. At the moment, Melectronics have the Motorola V3 Razr reduced from Fr 400 to Fr 199. I bought one for my girlfriend for Christmas. Very sleek, elegant and chic with bluetooth, wap and many other acronyms.

I saw today in my lunchbreak that my local Melectronics had about 20 units left. They're all matt black models

You can see the phone here: http://www.esato.com/phones/index.php/phone=141

The nice thing about this website is that you can choose a couple of phones and compare them side by side.

Any shops you can particularly recommend? I'll start with "Office World" in Dübendorf.

I wouldn't mind a beamer to hook-up to RowPro. I want something similar to this guy:

I am not too keen on Office World. My favourites for bargains are the Interdiscount shops (especially the XXL branches) and Media Markt.

They both seem to unload their end of line stuff regularly.

Just out of curiousity, is beamer an actual word in English outside of the US or is it just a Swiss (high and dialect?) German word that expats tend to unconsciously adopt? (I don't mean to be rude, just wondering.)

AFAIK a Beamer is like a Handy, Manchesters, a Smoking, etc.

An English sounding word that is not used in English. 'Video projector' is what a 'beamer' is in English - and a 'beamer' in English is a BWM...

OK, got me, whats a "Smoking". After checking with my wife I found that "Manchesters" are cords/corduroy trousers.

Then again, in Australia, "Manchester" is the section of the department store that sells bath towels etc

A Smoking is what the Swiss-Germans call a dinner jacket or tuxedo...

If you pick up the latest brochure / flyer from Interdiscount, they have lots of Restposten items featured, with a tally of how many of each unit remains. Prices (for some items) are quite good.

Note: It's the big brochure and not the small one.
