Newcomer to CH and 4G+ internet. Am I doomed?

Hello all,

I've recently moved to Switzerland, currently living with a family acquaintance for the next 6 months at least. She has a house in the countryside, no landline.

I'd like to know if anyone has tried out the "mobile internet" offers from Sunrise, a.k.a. getting your home internet with a small 4G+/LTE router instead of a wired/phone-line router?

I can imagine it's way less reliable than a classic broadband connection, but in the coming months, I won't have a choice.

Are you still able to stream Netflix? Is it good enough for online multiplayer games?

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: Newcomer to CH and 4G+ internet. Am I doomed?

Hey,

I have a 4G LTE router from Salt. It works perfect for multiplayer gaming because the amount of data transmitted is minimal. For minimal latency, the 4G router has an Ethernet output that you can connect directly to your computer.

Video streaming is sometimes slow, but nothing that waiting 2-3 minutes and then watch the show solves.

The only issue with Salt is the minimum contract duration. 6 months seems below typical contract duration. There are only 2 ways out of it before its end: contract another product from them that substitutes your current service, or leave CH.

Thank you, I was actually wondering why a 4G router would even need an etherport.

Slow at certain periods during the day or slow because of antenna distance/concrete/trees etc.?

Sunrise doesn't have a minimal contract duration, but I chose them because they received an "outstanding" rating for their 4G speed+coverage from Connect, Open-Signal and Ookla.

Re: Newcomer to CH and 4G+ internet. Am I doomed?

It's a bit relatively slow because I placed the router in a dedicated site in the apartment that connect to an Ethernet outlet for every room. The only downside is this place is in the kitchen behind a door and surrounded by concrete walls. I'd get better performance if I placed the router close to a window, but I prefer to have Ethernet outlet in every room

Ahh, good to know Sunrise has no minimal contract duration. I'll try when my contract with Salt ends. Thanks for the tip.

To be specific, I played World of Tanks and had 50-60 ms latency with the Salt 4G router + Ethernet on average. Sometimes with rain or storms, 120-150ms.

I already have a mobile plan with Sunrise, so I just did a speed test on my iPhone to see how well the 4G performs.

I got 41ms ping, 2,01MB/s download and 0,81 upload. Not bad.

Even though the internet plan I want to get specifies "up to 300Mbps" on 4G.

We live in the mountains and have Yallo home internet..... which is on the sunrise network. It's not perfect, but we watch TV, Netflix etc mostly without problems. We switched to it from a landline internet service because it was so much cheaper.

However, if it's just you using it, you may aswell get a mobile subscription with unlimited data, (Sunrise or Yallo etc) and hot spot your TV and laptop off your phone, no point paying twice.

of course 4G never will be as reliable as a broadbank cable connection. Latency/speed shouldn't be a problem though, especially since you can get a 5G subscription:

A house without a phone landline? Did you double check or only relying on second hand information?
https://www.swisscom.ch/en/residenti...ker-popup.html

For completness here the Swisscom mobile coverage map:
https://scmplc.begasoft.ch/plcapp/pa...ng.jsf?lang=en

Be aware that does map are not 100% accurate. If the house is in a ravine, behind a hill or similar the reception might be rather poor and insufficient for high speed internet. If possible find three people which have subscription on each of the three networks and let them test speed and reception at your home.

We're using it in our holiday home as fixed internet is not really an option. We have the slow 10 Mb connection but it is good enough to watch HD streaming on TV. Also, it's only 9.50 per month, which is unbeatable if you want to have a permanent connection with an unlimited data volume. If we need more speed, we use our phones as a hotspot, which are also Sunrise.

I'm pretty happy with it but keep in mind that the quality of the connection is dependent on your exact location.

Yea, I was initially really tempted by the 9,50CHF offer but given all the factors that can diminish the connection/speed, I decided to opt for the 49CHF plan which can, in ideal circumstances, go all the way to 300mbps.

Even if I get only 25% of that, it would be a lot better than an unreliable 10Mb connection.

Re: Newcomer to CH and 4G+ internet. Am I doomed?

Alright, so the internet plan I subscribed to just a few days ago, is available this week for 19CHF per month, down from 49, as per Black Friday.

Not gonna lie, it's pretty exasperating...is there even a slight chance if I go to a Sunrise store or call their Client relations that my contract might get included in this Black Friday offer or I shouldn't bother?
