Apple may be forced to drop Lightning [charging cable] in EU

https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-51137069

Now do the same with electric cars EU. Make them all use the same type of batteries and charging systems. Better yet, just make them so the batteries can be rapidly changed at a garage, the same way you fill up with petrol/diesel now.

Re: Apple may be forced to drop Lightning in EU

The first time I heard that the EP was looking at this it was USB 2 that was going to be the standard. They don’t act quickly in Brussels.

If they do act they will freeze technology improvements at the ‘C’ level which will have unforeseen consequences. And is frankly stupid.

Apple has already introduced wireless charging and soon all of their devices will charge wirelessly.

If they want to comply with a new regulation all they have to do is to include a fingernail sized USB C —> Lightning adaptor with every phone.

The problem with making all batteries the same is similar. Batteries are an evolving technology they get better and better every year. People want their devices to be as slim and small as possible. So an iPhone 11 phone’s battery, molded to the phone’s contour, is going to be a different size and shape from an iPhone 7.

But the one thing I agree with is that chargers should not be packaged with new devices. Not everyone needs a new charger.

Finally! Only Apple plays that stupid game, every single device at home gets charged with the same cable, it's only one corporate iPhone that needs a special cable. Good riddance.

Brilliant idea! Even my shaver has a USB-C charger. I love the idea of using only one technology (and one set of cables that fits for all).

Apple believes their connector is better than the USB connector. The ‘C’ connector is only now approaching the capabilities of the lightning connector.

Of course it has nothing to do with generating more revenue by pushing a proprietary technology

And what's to stop them from removing connections altogether and simply using wireless charging and wireless protocols for data transmission?

I only ever use wireless charging, whether at home or in the car.

The world balked when they culled the headphone jack but now there's wide adoption of this (the wireless headphone market is having a field day).

Cable salad is not a tasty treat.

fanboys can believe whatever they want, couldn't care less. Facts are different.
Lightning is USB 2 (only 400 Mbps), USB C is 3.1 (10 Gbps). Moreover, everything else is USB C, it's more versatile, it's cheaper it's more wide-spread. Basically, if the world was a rational place, which we know it isn't, the lightning should have been dead.

As I said above, I have an iPhone too, so pretty objective in what's good and what's bad with Apple's ecosystem. The perfect device would be Android hardware with Apple software, hate the google spyware, but there's no perfect thing unfortunately.

Browsing through specialist websites (purely for educational reasons) I noticed that nowadays dildo´s come with a USB charger.

Good thing Apple doesn´t have them in their product line.

Re: Apple may be forced to drop Lightning [charging cable] in EU

I think the unified connector should come from the industry world, and not from regulators, so that industry can still innovate as long as the manufacturers agree on a standard.

Which is what already happened, with the only exception of "think different" Apple. Lightning might be technically superior, but that is probably not so relevant for some people being forced to have two chargers at home and keep distinguishing between them.

Anyway, let me extend the topic: why are they still providing chargers with phones at all? Are they afraid people will use old chargers not supporting fast charging? Just popup a message on the screen, like some phones already do.
I would welcome if the EU banned the bundling of chargers for all devices featuring any USB port.

I claim the opposite:
- producers have a business interest that you need to come to them to buy a new charger if yours is broken. They also have an interest to change the adapters every few years to render all your accessories obsolete. I still have a very nice stereo system with the original iPhone connector on top.
- it is annoying for consumers, but not so much so that they would base a purchase decision for a smart phone solely on the power supply.

Classic example where ONLY a regulator will be able to achieve a result.

P.S> If USB-C is so terrible, why does our new macbook use it ;-)

I foresee the French power adapter trade union to go on strike and smash some stuff.

Yes, they have. It's called USB C and is endorsed by everyone but apple (btw, some of their iPads and Macbooks start to use it as they actually know the lightning one is lightning in name only and USB C is many times faster)

No, it's not. It's actually inferior in every single aspect, but brings home a gross margin of probably 99% on each cable sold + royalties for accessories
