Re: Anyone using [SIP] VoIP systems?

to add something useful to the discussion ....

I have had several SIP accounts over the last year or so as I experimented with different providers, and have settled on 3 or 4 now. I suspect most of you are in a similar situation, and either manually juggle these, or invest in an expensive hardware phone that can handle more than one at the same time.

there is an elegant solution now (and 'free' is often an integral part of elegant for me). Take a look at mySIPswitch.com.

you can configure your different provider accounts, and set up a dialplan to define which accounts are used to call out or receive calls. I am still figuring out the details but have a basic system up and running after a couple days.

family and friends can call me using local numbers in the US, UK and Switzerland, and they all ring the same phone. I can call out for pennies, and there is no monthly fees whatsoever. the Geek in me can't stop smiling

Why would you want to spend any money when there's VOIPbuster?
just discovered the service, and it works on my Nokia E60 to boot!

I can call landlines in North America and in most of W Europe for free... yes thats 'FREE'. Downside? you do not get a number that can be called - as far as I can tell so far

anyone else having much luck with SIP??
There is a new product in North America, US and Canada. It is called magicjack and cost $20.00 for the hardware and $20.00 a year for service. It plugs into a USB port on your computer and your telephone jack plug into this device. All calls to or from North America, US and Canada, are free. Web site is www.magicjack.com

Re: Anyone using [SIP] VoIP systems?

I use the Topcom Butler 4012 USB cordless phone ( http://www.topcom.net/communication/...2007xls80.html )

It is Skype certified and works well with my SIP Gateway ATA - a single phone that gives me free calls to other Skype users, free calls to landlines in CH, DE, FR, USA etc. using my gateway ( Switzernet ) and untimed 9cent calls to landlines in Australia.

Free Phone calls with MagicJack

Has anyone here heard of MagicJack. http://www.magicjack.com/

In the States you can make free calls anywhere in the country. Just hitch up a USB plug and your phone and ALL your calls are free local and long distance.

Would this work here in Switzerland?

If so this would definitely change the way we make phone calls internationally.

Re: Free Phone calls with MagicJack

This looks like Skype or simply VOIP - it uses the computer's broadband connection. Already available in Europe, google for skype or voip and you'll find lots of matches.

Re: Free Phone calls with MagicJack

I have no connection with this company at all! A relative of mine just told me about it. He just started using it a few days ago. Now all his calls are free. But he is in the US.

I was just wondering if anyone here has used this (It seems very new). And if it was worth me to order it myself. Considering the long distance calls I make it could be a great thing.

It is not VOIP but something new. You can see the videos about it with the link in the first message in this thread.

Re: Anyone using [SIP] VoIP systems?

Okay, just a question. The original subject header looked slightly...unusual. I've moved the discussion into this thread where we're discussing various voip solutions, as it mostly seems to do the same sort of thing.

Looking at the website, though, I must say it looks rather suspect. No info on who's running the site. Though an interesting review is here: http://www.usnews.com/articles/busin...magicjack.html

It IS however, VOIP as long as it's using internet protocols.

Re: Anyone using [SIP] VoIP systems?

Regarding MagicJack;
My brother-in-law uses it and it is actually pretty good. I am thinking of getting it so that I can call US for free. It is around $20 a YEAR for unlimited service, so the price if definitely nice. (He has been using it over a year now, so at least I know it isn't a scam and actually does what it says.)

From what I have seen so far:
Pros:
- $20 a YEAR
- Can use it anywhere. So when you travel, or just go to the coffee shop for that matter, and if you have a laptop, the service goes with you.

Cons:
-You have to have your computer on and the software running in order to receive calls

Re: Anyone using [SIP] VoIP systems?

Hi Jobo,

I curently live in the US and have been using the MagicJack for more than six months.

Here are my impressions:

Pro: Definately very cheap.
As easy as using a land line.

Con:
A power hit takes you off line
Phone must be within a few feet of the MJ.
Can use only one telephone per MJ.
Range with cordless phone limited to short distance from MJ.

Overall impressions:
The magicJack is a great improvement in costs over all other telephones systems. Here it is US $20.00/year and you can get a 5 year subscription for $60.00/year or $1.00 per month.
An amplifier would be nice to improve range.
Sound quality is not great but in most cases is adequate to good.
If the MJ goes off-line just reboot the CPU and the MJ comes back on-line.

I'm not certain the MJ is available in other countries but you can always get a friend in the US to buy one for you. (US $39.00 for the MJ and one (1) year of service.) It comes with a US telephone number which is valid for all calls to US and Canada phones.

Hope this helps for those of you who are thinking of purchase of the MJ.

Swisscheese

Re: Anyone using [SIP] VoIP systems?

There will be a new SIP service launching nationally in Switzerland mid-november. Can't tell you more about it because I don't know anything other than it is a company already running SIP in other EU countries and they are expanding.

More info will follow when I know more, which will be in a week or two...

The article compares Magicjack with Vonage. I've been using Vonage for 5 years; I have a New York City (212) number and a virtual London (020 7) number. I take the modem with me everywhere I travel, including our place in Switzerland; calls to the UK, US, France, etc. are free, Switzerland fixed lines are 6 US cents/min. The advantage is that it's a real telephone company, and I don't think I risk losing the unobtainable 212 area code number with an insolvent VoIP.

I use a Natel number for people ringing me locally. If I got a lot of local calls, which I don't, I would use SkypeIn or some such to save my callers money.

Teledis has a new, interesting package at CH 99/month for which includes one of their VoIP numbers, 125 TV channels, and 5 gb cable Internet. But you have to be in their service area. http://www.teledis.ch/

Vonage a 'real' telephone company??

your definition of 'real' must be real loose...
