Did your computer come with El Capitan by default or is it an older system.

You could try a date a year earlier.
It came by default, I researched all the release dates of upgrades to EC and tried them all. Not luck ...

I canít get the Macbook to boot. As I said I screwed that royally. I need an external drive with the El Capitan installer on it.
I could probably send you a usb stick with the installer on it if you still need it.

I screwed up the reformatting of an old MacBook. I’m trying to get it to a saleable state. The latest OS it will run is OSX 10.11 (El Capitan)

I’ve been trying to create a bootable USB but the machines I have are both on Mojave and it doesn’t appear possible to create a bootable Install USB from that OS.

Can someone assist? Instructions for creating this are readily available on the internet.

I’ll be happy to pay for the USB stick and your time and a profit.
I assume you erased the start up disk on your mac using disk utility first. What do you mean you screwed up formatting the mac book?

That is exactly what I did, but I followed the instructions for a more recent OS.

But, according to the internet the refusing toinstall is not a limited problem.

Apple is very clear on what OS one must have to be able to do so, and it has been mentioned in this topic.

I would not blame Apple for this one...

Yes, in a true Apple manners they are constantly changing procedures and approaches. So following instructions are usual fruitless if you are not on the exact same version of OSX.

- after you download OSX from your link, you must first mount it, than run the pckg and go trough installation of "Install OS X El Capitan.app". This is not yet installation of OS X El Capitan! Now you will get "Install OS X El Capitan.app" inside your app folder.

- even when on my mac with El Cap, the disk utilities doesn't partition USB keys anymore in the way as in videos.
- I used the right version of diskMaker X (version 6). This app is also somehow cumbersome as it doesn't show progress and you have to give some inputs during the process.

I am thinking my USB stick is defective. Will try a new one.

Well it turned out that my USB stick was faulty. Bought a new one and everything went perfect with making it bootable.

I downloaded El Capitan from here. It links to the Apple store ( Swiss )

Success! ! Hsppy dance !

First of all many many thanks to squeezethecroc (who uploaded a installer file, which unfortunately didnít work) and nejc who sent me a USB key with an installer file, which did work! Horray !

I think he used diskmaker X to accomplish this and it worked perfectly the first time.

I paused the process when it got to the bit asking for language choice and location thinking this would help the future owner ...

Once again a wonderful success for the EF community.

Happy dance, happy dance, happy dance.

I'm so sorry my installer wasn't any use. It worked years ago when I installed El Capitan on my MacBook Pro. But I'm glad you got it all sorted in the end.

Re: Any Mac user using El Capitan? OSX

You should also be able to update it now to latest Catalina or at least Mojave - check dosdude1.com website if interested - he has utilities for doing this for outdated hardware (I updated my MacPro 2008 to Catalina 10.15.5 yesterday).
