Any Mac user using El Capitan? OSX

I screwed up the reformatting of an old MacBook. Iím trying to get it to a saleable state. The latest OS it will run is OSX 10.11 (El Capitan)

Iíve been trying to create a bootable USB but the machines I have are both on Mojave and it doesnít appear possible to create a bootable Install USB from that OS.

Can someone assist? Instructions for creating this are readily available on the internet.

Iíll be happy to pay for the USB stick and your time and a profit.

Re: Any Mac user using El Capitan? OSX

You tried the apple instructions? Do this from the machine you want to clean..
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

All of mine are running catalina already..

Edit : You can follow this instructions from one of your newer machines.. It won't actually install over the top.

Better to try it from here.
https://support.apple.com/downloads/el%2520capitain

And you could try to boot in safe mode.
Quote:
To load your Mac in Safe Mode, press and hold the Shift key while it boots. You can stop holding the Shift key when you see an Apple logo and progress bar. To leave Safe Mode, just reboot your Mac without holding the Shift key
If you get it up and running then run the disk tools over it to try and get it stable-ish enough to reinstall.

Does terminal see the device, the USB stick?

If so, it might be worth to try to format it with the disk utility tool on the working mac.. If it doesn't see it, again try disk utility .. Does that see it.. If not, new USB stick maybe..

Edit : What does the error in terminal say?

Iím using the terminal routine to move the file Installelcapitan.app From the applications folder to the USB stick Everything proceeds then terminal says attempting to make the USB bootable. Then the error; (sorry canít remember the exact text) it says it canít make it bootable. Sticking the stick into the macbook is recognised but running the install program fails.

No clue what you all did, but Internet Recovery Mode should still be an option, it will in your case install the OS which was original on your Mac, but from there it should be simple to work your way up again. If internet recovery mode does not work you have more serious problems than just a faulty install.

Also, afaik you cannot make a bootable El Capitan USB with any system higher than High Sierra, but burning installation DVD's should still be an option since all you do is burn a downloaded image.

I will check it tomorrow, I think our server is still on El Cap. Working comps are already on Mojave.

If I understand it right, I need to follow instructions from Omtastat post:

That is local recovery mode, for Internet Recovery Mode you'll want another combo, out of my head I thought Option/Alt + Cmd + R, but you can easily google this.

You want Internet recovery mode due to your lack of any local source of a proper OS, so you want to grab an OS fresh of Apple servers during Install.

Re: Any Mac user using El Capitan? OSX

Could it be this issue with an Expired Installer?

Re: Any Mac user using El Capitan? OSX

Tried the internet download Shift-Option-Command-R this morning. Everything worked well, connected to Apple Store, Logged on with AppleID and Password, Chose Hard Disk, El Capitan started to download and then ....
OS X could not be installed on your Computer,

No packages were eligible for install. Contact the software manufacture for assistance. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.
Tried again with same result.

You have to set the time to a moment the certificate would still be valid.

I found that suggestion when searching for the error. Sadly it didn't work either

Did your computer come with El Capitan by default or is it an older system.

You could try a date a year earlier.
