Looking for suggestions on mobile phone subscriptions with Europe usage

Hey all!

I'm looking to get a swiss phone number that would allow me to use it on different European countries.
Something with high data volume would make sense and a low calls/text usage.

I have UPC internet at home, and I'm super happy with their service. They do have a plan that is 39CHF for costumers who have their internet service.
I'm just wondering if this is the best deal that I could get.

It always hurts when you compare prices from other European countries with similar products

Any suggestions for other mobile services and/or any feedback from UPC mobile?

The easiest way to find the best deal for your exact needs is to use an unbiased online comparison.

I can recommend moneyland.ch or dschungelkompass.ch

Keep an especially sharp eye out for special promotions. I got my plan at half-price forever as a special promotion. I know the moneyland.ch comparison shows promotions. Sometimes the phone companies will cold call you with great deals, especially if you are already a prepaid customer.

For 39 CHF/m you can have a look at Migros M-Budget MEGA.

I have too UPC at home, but for my needs I find a little more convenient the Migros subscription.

Spoiler alert: it has 5 GB/m, I don't know if it qualifies as "high data volume".

Yallo. They have subscriptions which have everything unlimited in Europe, use the Sunrise network and regularly have deals where you get 50% off forever, with no contract min period.

Re: Looking for suggestions on mobile phone subscriptions with Europe usage

Salt have a summer sale on at the moment, 45chf for unlimited calls, data, text, etc. for all but a very few countries globally. (2 year contract)

https://www.salt.ch/en/plus-europe/

If you don't need home internet while you're not there, this could replace your wired service as well.

Re: Looking for suggestions on mobile phone subscriptions with Europe usage

High data volume? In the past that was 1GB or so. But in these days where a Windows Update is more than 3 GB?

Wingo gives you 2 GB EU/Western Europe. 5 CHF/GB for more. Good enough for me.

Be aware that there are just three distinct mobile networks in Switzerland: Swisscom, Salt, Sunrise.

UPC is currently using the Swisscom Network (they switched 2019 from Salt).

Re: Looking for suggestions on mobile phone subscriptions with Europe usage

Checkout yallo superfat XXL -> quite often they have it promotion for 49/ month

There is:
everything unlimited in CH
unlimited roaming in Europer + USA + CAnada
unlimited calling / sms to Europe

One catch is that after 40GB / month in roaming it slows down to 256kbps... but still 40GB in roaming / month at full speed is not bad.

Ah, I see now salt has 'europe' on sale for 45 that's not a bad deal.. only downside is salt network (yallo uses sunrise)

The downside to Salt is that their customer service is appalling. When your 2 year deal is up, they couldn't give a hoot about giving you a good offer to stay with them.

Yallo are awesome, they regularly have deals that are "forever" but also with no minimum contract and whenever I've rung them up to see if I could get a "new customer deal" as an existing customer, they did it straight away, no issues.

The down side of the Salt network is there mediocre coverage in the Jura region and specially in the alps and Ticino. If you are a hiker I recommend to select a provider which uses the Sunrise or Swisscom network. Best if your hiking buddy has the other one.

Re: Looking for suggestions on mobile phone subscriptions with Europe usage

The EU roaming allowances on _all_ swiss mobile networks are a royal ripoff. One way or another you are paying around 5CHF per Gb on a swiss sim card when you go abroad, that is just ridiculous pricing.

If you use a mobile abroad for anything more than just occasional trips, the best is to use a dual sim phone and buy a EU sim card and charge/use that it when you go abroad, both for data and calls - it will be cheaper on the long term.

Re: Looking for suggestions on mobile phone subscriptions with Europe usage

I recommend yallo Swype. It cost 25 per month (I think there is a 19.50 promo) for unlimited ch everything. Then, you can just buy a unlimited overseas pass for 3chf a day.

The pricing is great if you only occasionally travel to eu.

I have same - had UPC internet for years, switched from Salt to UPC for mobile summer last year. Network is very reliable (runs over Swisscom) and when I looked I didn't find a better deal from anybody I trusted. YMMV.

I have this plan too, happen to start just when Corona hit - they were very good as they refunded me 30 CHF ie the months I could not go roaming (this abo costs 10 more than a normal but includes european data roaming allowance). Since then I have used it in Germany and Italy and it's great to have the 10GB data access.

The only down side I have faced is that Wifi Calling is not supported on my phone, although it was with Swisscom before.

Be careful when roaming with Yallo. I was in Canada when they sent me a text message offering a deal of some sort. So I agreed, paid the fee and paid roaming charges on all my calls and data because their deal didn’t apply in Canada. Bar Stewards.

Re: Looking for suggestions on mobile phone subscriptions with Europe usage

One thing to be aware of is that all options mentioned above do not include cross-border calls (i.e. CH to EU and vice-versa). If you are in EU you can call EU on your roaming allowance, but not if you are in CH - then the prices for calling into EU are crazy. If your EU friends are calling you on your CH sim they also taking a hit as most often CH is not included in their call plans.

That's one of the reasons why using a CH sim for communicating with/within EU is useless - just get a EU sim and use that instead, and use Watsapp or whatever data-based calling app instead of the mobile network.

Re: Looking for suggestions on mobile phone subscriptions with Europe usage

For 50, you can have unlimited CH, EU and USA calls in/out, roaming.

It's Salt's dirty little secret that you swing over to www.green.ch and look at the mobile sub there. It will send you to Salt and you get a great deal with great notice period - caveat being without a phone.

This is what I have and I am relatively happy with the service.

Do I read it right? (I'm not good with mobile-internet jargon)

I will get unlimited internet in Switzerland.
Whenever I do drive over the border, i pay 3chf for that day, and will get unlimited internet , over the border too.
If I go for a 5 day holiday to Italy, i pay 15chf more, and can get unlimited internet for my holiday. ( I use maps/navigation and music streaming all the time. I like to check hotels and restaurants info online before I enter them)
Also , here there is no contract. One may stop anytime.
Also , it is true unlimited internet? There is no throttling of speed after certain amount of usage, even while roaming in the EU.
Also, there are no registration fees.

Why isn't everyone going in for this deal? I live in Basel, and go across the border regularly.
(Hope I can also use my existing salt number when I move to Yallo Swype.)
Thanks for your replies

yes that is correct. i am using it. and it is exactly what it said it is.

during the pandemic i saved like 2 whole months, by switching from monthly to daily and i spent a total of 9 chf for 2 months, since i never left my apartment much at all.
