Cellular plan for kids that does not let the child go over data limit?

I'm looking for a cell phone plan for my 14 year old that once he reaches the data limit for the month (i.e. 10gb) does not allow more data. We use Swisscom and they have a plan for kids, but it only slows down after 10gb, it does not stop the data use. My son has some learning issues and he won't be able to monitor this on his own.

Or perhaps if anybody knows of an app that can stop the data at a certain point, that could work also.

Any help appreciated.

Do you actually want to limit his data use or just make sure he doesn’t rack up huge bills? If the later, why not get an unlimited plan. Yallo do unlimited everything within Switzerland (Yallo Swiss Flat) for about 30 francs when they have discounted it (it’s not discounted today, but if you check regularly you’ll get a good deal).

Now that you ask, I see I didn't provide enough information. I want to make sure he doesn't rack up huge bills. I really like the Swisscom price of 9.90 and the free calls to 5 Swisscom numbers. That fits us perfectly. My concern is that he maybe has a game on there that is using data and he doesn't realize it or he is watching Youtube videos. Mostly, I want him to be able to call us, text us, WhatsApp with us and friends and maybe listen to Spotify. The rest he can do when on wifi.

Re: Cellular plan for kids that does not let the child go over data limit?

I strongly think a child has to learn how to limit himself by himself as there are tons of parental control apps (:msn sick:) but what you need is already a basic android function:
1. just limit the data: find "data warning and limit" in settings and set data limit
or:
2. limit screen time

Manage your child's screen time

if you are using ios, probably there is something similar

Unfortunately, not all kids are created equal. As I mentioned above, my son has learning disabilities. Us parents, the school special ed teachers, and therapists are working on giving him more independence. At this point, he will not be able to control this himself. It simply is not possible for him (through no fault of his own). Sadly, he will never be able to live alone. And he is unlikely to ever be able to work a full time job. Maybe someday he will be able to understand train schedules and take trains on his own, but that is a long way off. The main reasons we want him to have a phone is to be able to contact us if he is lost and for us to find him if needed (via the stalker apps you mentioned). But I'd prefer not to derail the thread and go any further down this path for now. But no harm in your comment.

Found it on my Android! I had no idea that was there. I think it is the prefect solution. Thanks.

Just a thought... if he does hit his data limit, you won't be able to locate him with find my friends type apps (nor will WhatsApp work away from wifi).

Re: Cellular plan for kids that does not let the child go over data limit?

I’m not up to date with the lastest Swisscom plans, but I thought it used to be that when you hit your data limit, the data was throttled so you couldn’t eg watch video, but it still worked for basic browsing without an additional charge. Has that changed?

Re: Cellular plan for kids that does not let the child go over data limit?

I use Sunrise, and my son has a plan with unlimited WhatsApp, free calls to three numbers and free SMS, plus 10 monthly gigas of internet.

Via Sunrise app, I can easily decide what to do if he goes beyond his data or calling usage: block him, get a text on my phone, etc.

Check that swisscom abo you like very thoroughly, usually it's X amount of GB at max speed but after the limit you can keep surfing at e.g. 128 kpbs without any additional cost (enough for whatsapp and web use, not enough for videos).

typically those that throttle after the data limit usually do not charge for the excess throttled usage.
