New Building - UPC Installation

[Pictures in the links below]

Hello all,

I tried to search this topic but was unable to find anything recent.

We just moved to a new building which (supposedly) has powerline networking built in - i.e., install your UPC modem in the closet, and then every room has wired internet.

Excellent news - especially since this apartment has concrete walls, so wifi signal weakens considerably as we move around. I could just install access points in key places and voila!

Except not really. the UPC cable is doesn't fit in the box installed in the closet. UPC won't provide any other cable than the ones that go in the 2-socket regular cable setup in most rental apartments in ZH.

See these pictures of the cable provided by UPC - Red end is supposed to go into the modem, and blue end into the wall. Except the blue end is "too small" to fit into the wall - and the male pin looks too big to actually fit anyway (hehe).

In my (uneducated) assessment, if I could find a cable that was similar to the red plug at both ends, it would work (I've tried the red on the wall socket, it fits). UPC shrugs and says get a certified technician/electrician to do so - but just to install a cable? Seems a bit egregious.

Anyone have ideas on where to get such cables? Coop Bau was a self-goal, and Galaxus may have a vast range of ideas but unfortunately, I don't know the technical definitions/names of these socket-ends.

Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated!!!

Do you mean this system which uses your electric cabling?

Re: New Building - UPC Installation

You want an F Male to IEC Male converter or cable.

https://www.reichelt.com/ch/de/ansch...ct=pol_4&nbc=1

or

https://www.reichelt.com/ch/de/f-ste...ct=pol_0&nbc=1

(Reichelt ships from Germany. Import tax and import handling might apply. Read: https://www.ezv.admin.ch/ezv/en/home...d-parcels.html and Help-problem with import tax )

Re: New Building - UPC Installation

Thanks! Good to know the names/classifications now - looking at the holes though, I feel like i'll need a F Male - F Male cable (the super thin pin inside, not the fatter one). Does that make sense to you?

Re: New Building - UPC Installation

Yes, that's the one. Except unlike the picture, it should be all built into the walls already, not requiring the retail powerline adapters.

That makes sense. And the adapter should be F - Male, IEC - Female. Sorry was too early in the morning.

An F - Male, F- Male cable is also known as "Sat Kabel", or "Satellitenkabel", as they is commonly used with dish setups. Should be available in Interdiscount, Media Markt, M-electronics etc. Advantage that you can get a short one and prevent a mess in the box.

Speaking of M-Electronics. They have the correct adapter in many locations on stock. A bit more expensive than Reichelt, but you will have it right away.

Mate, you are awesome! Thank you so much for the good advice.

I have found this part at a local interdiscount (closer than the M-Electronics in the city), so I will stop by and test it out and report back! Fingers crossed!

You should connect to the one saying 11.2 or 10.8, not the 20, that's just a test, very attenuated tap.
