Is UPC Connect Box compatible with Smart DNS or VPN masking service?

I just signed upto UPC internet and I can't seem to find anywhere wher I can replce the IP address of the DNS proxy. Has anyone tried using masking DNS os VPn service with UPC's Connect Box (Router)?

Just reviving this thread.

Has anyone managed to use a VPN successfully with UPC? If so, how?

Re: Is UPC Connect Box compatible with Smart DNS or VPN masking service?

I use Express VPN with UPC's Smart Box, but I could see no way to run it from the modem itself. But it gives me all I want for each device...

Add your own router to the setup. Can the cable modem run in bridge mode still?

Double-NAT is not going to be a problem if you're creating a VPN tunnel from the 2nd router anyway, Smart DNS will also work fine.

Which Smart DNS provider are you using?

Re: Is UPC Connect Box compatible with Smart DNS or VPN masking service?

I use smart dns proxy and currently I have to connect devices individually but before I could just amend the router and everything connected to the wifi would automatically use the vpn.

The problem with connecting individual devices is that itís almost impossible to connect Amazon Fire stick to this DNS/VPN service despite having tried it more than 10 times.

Can anyone recommend a simple VPN service using the UPC?

Re: Is UPC Connect Box compatible with Smart DNS or VPN masking service?

how much is that service?

Get a VPN-capable router, preferably OpenVPN compatible. Set the VPN on that and connect your Fire stick.

The other method is slightly more annoying as you will re-write the DNS requests from the stick to Amazon (I assume it goes there). tips: https://techwiser.com/bypass-chromecast-dns/ - I am sure the same exists for Amazon.

Give ProtonVPN a try: https://protonvpn.com/
They also have a free limited offer that's decent.

In addition, use your own router off of UPCs'. At least for sake of security!

I use the VPN server on a Fritzbox with no-ip free dynamic dns service.
For region changing on the phone I use free Windscribe VPN when I need to.

Re: Is UPC Connect Box compatible with Smart DNS or VPN masking service?

you VPN guys are missing the ask, it's usually better and easier to avoid the VPN and have the smart DNS provider fake your location to the service.

the problem is that Amazon, Google have hardwired DNS in their sticks which means you either have to re-write the DNS calls to a different IP or blackhole the DNS and let it fail over to yours.

The stinky chap links to a service who are more responsive to my ask of them than ms current provider and I will likely be moving to them. I have a test account and it works really really well.

But you have to be able to set your own DNS. As I am with Salt, I can say I have the same issue and get around this by having my own router behind the fiber box; better wifi and feature-rich options come with it too.

Re: Is UPC Connect Box compatible with Smart DNS or VPN masking service?

Thank you all for your great advice. Based on the response and ease of use, I think having my own router connecting to the UPC smart box seems like a simpler solution.

It's what I do with a Pi-Hole (or two) taking care of DNS on the Fritz.

There are several VPN services available in the amazon store. For example Expressvpn.

1) Start the firestick
2) Open the expressvpn app
3) Connect to network you wish
4) switch and use app you wish to use
