Guardian rank Home Computers - OUTRAGE! RANT!

The left wing RAG, the Guardian, has outdone itself this time and I am tempted to write a formal letter.

Not content with supporting Jeremy Corbyn, Striking Miners, Extinction Rebellion and any other flag waving loonies, they have now outdone themselves in a far more offensive way: they have ranked Home Computers in a top 20 (https://www.theguardian.com/games/20...mputers-ranked) and to be honest, it's sickening:

- The ZX81 is 17th. Its ranked lower than a VIC 20!!
- The Spectrum is not top, its surpassed by a C64, an Amiga and - hold firmly onto the side of your desk - the IBM PC!
- The Atari ST is LOWER than the Amstrad CPC 464. Thats right, you did hear it correctly: LOWER.

I could go on and on here, its so offensive it should be in the Adult section, assuming the Guardian has one.

If your rating on technical acheivement, perhaps its somewhere near (roughly, giving it a lot of room) correct, but in terms of an impact on home computing its an insult.

Home computing impact correct order:

1. Speccy 48k
2. C64
3. ZX81
4. Amiga
5. Atari ST
6. VIC 20
7. BBC Model B
8 The Dragon whatever-it-was
9 Sinclair C5

there isnt anything below that. the rest of them are just a grey area of early days business models and failed experitments.

I don't know if it's a sad fact that I own, boxed, your top 3 plus another in your top 9.

Plus an Atari 2600 and this:

Well, yes, I can imagine their inbox (aahh.. more like the C:\) will be full.

At least they put the ZX-48k at number 4 - I would debate first and second place between this and the IBM PC. That's cause I've never had any of the other ones Even then, considering how much of a mess the IBM PC has become, how can anyone place it first place is beyond me

What? What about ISBN 978-0070109629 the home soldered Z80?
How can that be omitted? It was my very first computing experience. Dad and his beloved Eurocard rack computer.

My Atari 800 is 7th.

Those good old times when you wanted to play the Goonies, loaded from a cassette for 40 minutes, got an error and did it again😀

And where is the very first „home computer“, the Sinclair ZX80. £99 for no screen, no memory, 1K ram and hardly a keyboard.

Wish I‘d kept mine now...

It is more a question why the PC became the gaming beast it s today. The answer is Microsoft DirectX https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX

But the IBM was not really a home micro as such - aimed originally at the business market.

The list also left out the Memotech computers - of which I had a MTX 512. Made by a British company - who sadly had the rug pulled from under them by the Soviet Union.

OH has still got his in the original polystyrene packaging, also the little printer with the silvery coloured heat paper and some cassette tapes. I don't like the rubbery feel of the keyboard, it's a bit icky!

I remember a simple decision from the mid 1990s. Actually, my elder brother's decision. Doom (id software and running on DOS, no directX) available on PC today or wait until Doom is released for Mac? For some reason there was a months/years delay for the same game to be released for Mac. Maybe it was one of the monopolistic practices of Microsoft or Apple put zero interest in porting games to their operating system?

As a Dutchie I was flabbergasted that the iconic P2000T was not in the list. Plus my Sinclair QL is also missing ?

Back in high school I was ZX Spectrum all the way...
