Low internet speed problem

Big Disappointment so far!
Before I buy any Mobile internet, I thought Switzerland has very fast internet. And the year is 2021! But after I bought a mobile internet subscription from Sunrise (it suppose to up to 300mbit), I get only 3-5 mbit. I live in Winterthur so it is not a rural area. I have 4K tv but hardly watch 1080p. I donít know what to do because it is a 24-month contract.
Any suggestions?

I would try different locations in the house. Might make a difference.

Consult your neighbors and see what they say.

I donít know anyone with issues and our subscriptions work as advertised.

Re: Low internet speed problem

Would a WiFi repeater help with mobile internet?

My husband bought these (link below) for our house about a month ago, and they've helped a lot. These are some of the more expensive ones, though (there are much cheaper available):

https://www.allithypermarket.com.my/...-2-pack-3-pack

Sorry if that's not the kind of thing that would help with your issue, though. I am most certainly NOT a "techy."

Is it the same throughout the day or, for example, is it much faster in the middle of the night?

It may be due to congestion with so many more people being at home, and working from home.

With your own connection, is anyone else using the internet in your household?

Run speedtest.net from a browser to check the speed and the ping (and hence latency) of your connection. That may be linked to the congestion too.
What were the results?

Sunrise advertise up to 300Mbits/S. That's under ideal conditions but what you are experiencing is obviously a lot lower than that.

Re: Low internet speed problem

Check the intensity of the 4G/5G signal within your home. Sometimes little hotspots like this one have very small antennas and don't have good signal reception. I had to place mine next to a window and problem almost solved.

Re: Low internet speed problem

We never had any luck with sunrise and will only ever use a Swisscom or Salt based network.
Have you checked the set-up of the mobile router? If the apn isn't correct it can mean you'll only get low speeds. You should also be able to force it to use 4G only.
The other thing is maybe the router simply isn't very good. Talk to Sunrise and demand that they do something. It could simply be that the reception where you are isn't good.
Have you tried using the SIM in your phone to see if you get a better speed?

Re: Low internet speed problem

Sunrise is really crap. Even with good signal I often experienced packet loss. Customer support totally unhelpful. It's worth paying more for something that actually works (Swisscom has been great so far for 4G, init7.net great for landlines).

Re: Low internet speed problem

I got consistently between 30 and 100 on a Yallo (rebadged Sunrise) mobile 4G deal. It completely depends on how far you are from the nearest aerial and how busy that aerial is. I'd get 100Mbit easily early morning and 30 at lunchtime when all the kids are hammering it.

This was using a proper 4G router though not a tiny mobile dongle (which others have said have much smaller/poorer antennas)

I talked technical support, they made a reset for my SimCard, speed improved a bit but still not fast to watch 2K videos without interruption.

Mobile internet speeds will almost always be less than a fixed line and are often heavily speed throttled. Why don't you just get a fixed internet line... why are you using a mobile SIM for your home internet?

it's possible it's the walls or your position limiting the speed, or congestion because you are in a city and everybody is doing the same thing at the same time.

Also it's hard to exclude in-house or phone-related slow-downs if you are not using a real 4G router.

If you get a wired connection, do yourself a favor and get one from a decent provider.

Swiss internet is reasonably fast but not the fastest, and when I try to play online with friends who use hotspots or local wifi connections, it's always a mess.
If you want reliable connection, you need wires. This has always been my go-to and I never have issues (I also avoid the likes of sunrise and salt).

What a bad choice, with respect. Winterthur offers fiber all over the city, there are even some deals actually lower than 20 CHF/mth, i.e. teleking, compared to your actual special deal of (my guess) sunrise mobile internet unlimited for 19 CHF but 24 months
https://www.dschungelkompass.ch/festnetz/checker.xhtml

Alternatively I would check the map where the antennas are, and place your box accordingly.
Second ask if Sunrise is able to provide a LTE-Router with external antenna, should very likely increase the throughput.

Latency from 4G hotspots is woeful - you're talking ISDN ping speeds from a decade or more ago (30-50ms). That's nothing to do with Swiss internet though but rather 4G latency in general.

As an aside I get a ping of 5ms on Sunrise fibre for gaming and it's perfect (I play COD regularly) so there's nothing wrong with them either but agree always used a wired connection for gaming and not wifi.

Re: Low internet speed problem

After some discussions with Sunrise, I decided to buy landline home internet and sunrise will deactivate my Mobil internet after 2 months of notice period so I won't be charged anymore. I am not able to cancel the contract because in that case, I would have to pay 24 monthsí amount.
That is my mistake not to buy a landline in the first place, but I couldnít anticipate the Mobil internet that slow, especially in the middle of Switzerland.
Anyway gained some experience
Thank you for all the suggestions by the way.
