Keeping Canadian phone number after arriving in Switzerland

Does anyone have an idea if it is possible to keep my Canadian mobile phone number after arriving in Switzerland?

Is it possible to transfer numbers internationally?

You can keep your Canadian number if you keep paying the bill. But you’ll be charged roaming costs whilst using it in CH and Swiss people won’t want to call you unless they have an international call package. Why would you want to do this?

Re: Keeping Canadian phone number after arriving in Switzerland

IIRC the phone number is in the SIM card. So if (you can) keep your Canadian account it will work here. Get a phone with two SIMs and you have got the best of both worlds.

The roaming charges are going to be high.

But if you are asking can you use your Canadian Number with a Swiss phone account, I don’t think you can.

I'm not sure if this is also available for Canadian numbers, but when we moved from the US we ported our American numbers to Google Voice for a one time $20 payment.

You can't forward the calls to your CH number, but I can still make/receive calls, voicemails and texts through my laptop. Most important for me was if/when we move back I can still have the same number.

Just ensure your service is activated to cover Europe. I got a dual sim phone and ran both numbers from one handset, works fine.

If you're using VOIP then any phone number listed is not in any way used within the call process, but just as an identifier within (some of the) proprietary voice/messaging systems like whatsapp, skype etc. So there's no need top "port" your foreign number, and certainly no need, in general, to pay for the privilege.

If you think about it, using your phone via your laptop is no different from using a bluetooth headset or similar, not in any way linked to the SIM(s) in the phone and any number(s) they're subscribed to.

Re: Keeping Canadian phone number after arriving in Switzerland

If you can port it to a VOIP service in Canada, then this would be the best option.

I have multiple Swiss and UK VOIP numbers for incoming calls but can manually set the outgoing number etc....
