Facebook leak. Are you affected, will you do anything about it?

Facebook had a serious leak in 2019, which is now gaining publicity.

https://www.wired.com/story/facebook...phone-numbers/

Hear you can read about how to check if you were affected:

https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-56650387

Facebook, apparently, unsurprisingly and as usual, is not going to do anything meaningful about it.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-f...-idUSKBN2BU2ZY

What are your thoughts on the subject, what actions are you going to take, if any?

If I may ask, is she getting any more than usual unwanted calls or messages? Since late 2019 and since 2 days ago (these are two major activity milestones for this data breach).

Old news, a leak that was reported and addressed back in 2019, and already discussed at length in a thread from the time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, please, but the thread by the link and the vast majority of messages in it (every message apart from 1, to be precise) predate the leak in question. That thread is focused on email DBs leaks and compromised security of many different websites, this topic is about the major leak of the phone numbers matched with other personal data from the FB.

Whatsapp is going to present new T&C on May 15. If you don't agree, you'll be inactivated.

Neither wife nor me affected... I am not sure yet how I'll handle it. I think the WhatsApp TOC changes worry me more, sadly my data has been leaked so many times already.

It may be old data. The new thing is that they were found neatly sorted and posted on one website.

<<What are your thoughts on the subject>>
Anybody who thinks electronic data can ever be stored 100% secure is a dreamer. Anybody who thinks data can be stored 100% secure while being accessed via internet by virtually anybody is a dummy. Anybody who is outraged about data-leek can't be helped.

The point is to hand out personal info carefully. And while doing that still not expecting it to never be leaked. There is a difference in the world knowing who I am, where I live, what my phone-no. is to details of my private life only I should know.

It's a circle. New inventions - hackers - new inventions - hackers. I'm quiet thankful for the hackers, they keep things in balance.
The funny thing is: With the likes of facebook, google &Co. who use your data to make money everybody feels fine, with the likes of the hackers who use your data to make money (yet some just do it to make a point) everybody is outraged.

edit: Phone-no. apparently not pwnd either. The two email-addresses I use for shopping etc. have been pwnd a long time ago. I changed their password but obviously they will show as being pwnd for ever.

Same here and no WhatsApp/Instagram. But my wife's account was hacked, her password changed, she cannot get in there anymore. Not sure exactly, when that happened. haveibeenpwned.com shows her data all over the place. The wife is now cured from Facbook...

Re: Facebook leak. Are you affected, will you do anything about it?

Facebook account: deleted last year.
Linkedin account: deleted today.

Currently in the process of identifying and nuking any other useless social media crap from my life because not only did I personally not benefit from using them in what I consider meaningful ways (friends and family I care about are all on Whatsapp and we are in frequent contact), but it's honestly crazy and somewhat scary how crap these companies are at managing and securing your personal data. I had my FB and Linkedin account for many years so there was a ton of stuff and contacts on there collected over the years that would have taken ages to clean up and prune. Certainly more time than is worth it.

I may create another Facebook account with a dummy email address and no personal info or contacts just for accessing Facebook groups which can admittedly be useful, but most of my activities are organised through existing friends groups on Whatsapp or the groups on Meetup.

Re: Facebook leak. Are you affected, will you do anything about it?

2nd half of 2019?

Around that time Facebook was promoting the Libra idea (electronic payments system). I guess acknowledging publicly a data breach when you're trying to sell trust to the world is not optimal. It seems social media companies may not have the right company culture for the job.

another one here with a different email for every single site I have a registration with.

to be honest, I hardly use the platform any more, it's not so relevant today. I access FB about once a month.

The data might be "old" but it's still going to be accurate. Let's face it, we all have not changed our names recently.....

Linkedin can potentially be useful for sure, but only if you are really actively promoting yourself, brand or business or looking for a job.

99% of my activity was refusing contact requests or uninteresting job offers from headhunters trying their luck.

Re: Facebook leak. Are you affected, will you do anything about it?

Wow, check Guardiand fresh expose on Facebook and political manipulation... https://www.theguardian.com/technolo...d-manipulation

Quote:
Facebook has repeatedly allowed world leaders and politicians to use its platform to deceive the public or harass opponents despite being alerted to evidence of the wrongdoing.

The Guardian has seen extensive internal documentation showing how Facebook handled more than 30 cases across 25 countries of politically manipulative behavior that was proactively detected by company staff.

The investigation shows how Facebook has allowed major abuses of its platform in poor, small and non-western countries in order to prioritize addressing abuses that attract media attention or affect the US and other wealthy countries. The company acted quickly to address political manipulation affecting countries such as the US, Taiwan, South Korea and Poland, while moving slowly or not at all on cases in Afghanistan, Iraq, Mongolia, Mexico, and much of Latin America.
It's about time that more people realised that Facebook is not some harmless social media platform that occasionally mishandles your data. It is wide open to abuse and has the power to change nations... and Facebook execs are fully aware of it and allow things to happen at their own pace according to their own priorities. I hope Facebook gets subject to heavy regulation over the coming years.

Re: Facebook leak. Are you affected, will you do anything about it?

In many cases though the 'Have I Been Pwned' website can show your email even if that's the only thing which was leaked (which can happen easily without passwords), which in turn can also be of little actual risk.

That said, to be honest if it wasn't for my separate musical stuff (I produce music as a hobby) I probably wouldn't bother with half the social media. It's unfortunate that there are few other avenues to promote nowadays.

There were basically none unless you were good and detected by someone in the business.
