SIM supporting 2G

Hi all,

As my kid next year starts kindergarten and has to go alone to school, I am planning to use a small tracker for some peace of mind - the one I have needs a 2G SIM able to send and receive SMS.

Any suggestions on the carrier with the best coverage in Zurich and SMS plans?

Re: SIM supporting 2G

I can’t comment on the SIM…..

But they are not truly walking alone, they are walking a recommended route in company with other kids from the neighborhood along with parents of smaller kids going the same direction. And there is often a Police presence in an unmarked car.

At least that was our experience so try to stay calm.

Re: SIM supporting 2G

There is no such thing as a 2G SIM, it is the device that is 2G.

Anyway, 2G in Switzerland is being phased out, Swisscom is down already (don't now about the others): https://www.swisscom.ch/en/about/net...phase-out.html

This is correct, 2G network in Switzerland was turned off end of last year.
My Tomtom GPS that receives traffic-info via 2G now gets nothing here.

Sunrise will continue to support 2G until at least the end of 2022

If you check Digital Republic, they have a plan right for this purpose (4CHF/month)

You want to put a tracker on your 5-year old because you don't trust them to successfully complete an important step towards being independent that thousands of kids in Switzerland have managed for decades? That is a bit of a shame, but I understand that being from a different country makes the thought quite a scary one.

As someone else mentioned, the norm is not to walk alone, but to create a chain of children. The one furthest away from Kindergarten may be walking alone for a short distance but they meet the next kid along the route. That give you a first check in point, if that kid doesn't see your kid, they will know something is off. Obviously, there is not going to be an instant response because there are many reasons why your kid may not show up but the chances of something bad happening on that short stretch are very small.

The police come to Kindergarten to show them road safety and they wear a high visibility marker. I went to Kindergarten over 30 years ago and in all that time I don't remember there being any child abductions (presumably what you are afraid of) from complete strangers. Divorced parents, yes, but not strangers. Switzerland has a very strong focus on your child learning to do challenging things appropriate to their age. It strengthens self-confidence and resilience; use this opportunity and trust the process, it really works.

Re: SIM supporting 2G

You can get watch kids trackers/wrist phones with swisscom it's less 5 francs a month

But before you do, you need to see what the kindergarden thinks about watches on kids (where I live the school does not allow any type of smart watch)

I also would suggest that depending on the child (and how the parents feel) someone walks with the kids for the first few months... The police visit mentioned normally only happens after the autumn holidays, and if it gets dark in the mornings you might not feel comfortable til spring to let them walk alone.

There is no need to feel you need to rush things, yes eventually all kids here walk alone or in small groups, but better to have a serene start. We had a rota with some other families living near by, and when all parents felt fine the kids eventually walked alone.

I have one of these:
https://www.galaxus.ch/de/s15/produc...sband-14195393

5 day battery life, waterproof ... the subscription works all over Europe, which is nice...

Ok, may be hard to put a collar on your kid, but you can always clip the tracker to his bag or something...

Does it come with a 'shock' option if they stray too far?

Re: SIM supporting 2G

I can understand your concern.

We used this for a while -
https://www.paj-gps.de/store/easy-finder/

SOS button, SIM card included, Geo fencing, speed alerts etc etc (so you can set alerts if the tracker moves faster than XX speed)
The app was nice and device worked flawlessly.

We didn't use it to track the way to school. But during some holidays, in a new country. Gives peace of mind.

Absolutely not! I would never put a shock collar anywhere near my dogs...

Some human I know may benefit from it though

Actually, I was thinking of the children using it.
