Euro 2020 games "delay"

Ok this is I know a weird question but whatevs...

So from what I understood in Switzerland we all get TV through our internet connection, right?

So TV via internet is delayed from the real thing. When I watch Italy I had to turn the phone off as I get messages from friends on "Yeeah we scored" 30' earlier than it happens on my tv.

Last night France was playing and I heard people shouting for the goals 30' earlier (I live in central Geneva)... So I was wondering how this is possible if we are all on the "delayed" Internet-provided TV?

Re: Euro 2020 games "delay"

I have a satellite dish and the Zattoo app on my TV.
I always get things earlier via the dish than via Zattoo.

Maybe they were also watching via other means like a satellite channel?

Re: Euro 2020 games "delay"

I noticed this in a recent Euro match too but I watched the match via the Blue TV Swisscom app which might have a built-in delay as I happened to notice someone scored on Twitter seconds before

I think this is often true even before internet feeds that there is a slight delay

No, we get it via cable, DVB-C.

It was quite annoying during Swiss-Ita last week.
We were in a bar on a square and some people watching the match from home were shouting 20" before we could see the goal as well.

I think 20 seconds is OK but I'd be complaining about a whole 30 minute delay

Live broadcast tv almost always has a 20 or 30 second delay to allow for broadcasters to 'cut in' or bleep out any footage which could cause offence.

Case in point, a long time friend was working from home in Brooklyn on 9/11. His tv was next to his living room window looking out towards the Twin Towers, so he saw the second plane hit 30 seconds before it was broadcast 'live' on tv.

Also, my UK house is in ear shot of a football ground and a rugby league ground. If we were watching a match on tv, we always heard the crowd roar before someone scored on the 'live' tv coverage.

What I would do, just for the hell of it, is in a quiet period in the game, rush outside screaming "Goal! Goal!" and then hide.

Re: Euro 2020 games "delay"

Live TV is does not always have delay. When we had TV using a Sunrise TV Box we have never had a delay...using an app like TV Neo on the other hand does have delay...I have used wilmaa, zatoo..they all have delay and it is sort of normal.
We use an iptv app to watch Premier League...it has delays and there is nothing you can do about it unless...like I said your TV uses a box.

Yes, they do. The others just have more delay... its not exactly news: Online betting services exploited this for years by having somebody sitting in the stadium and giving them an edge of a few seconds. Most prominently in tennis as there are more points per game to bet on:

Re: Euro 2020 games "delay"

https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.ph...ates-fans.html

Broadcast type Average delay (seconds)
Analogue Radio Near instantaneous
Digital Radio 1 - 2
Satellite television 0.9 - 2.2
Digital terrestrial TV > 1
Cable television ~5
Streaming 10 - 45

Streaming in this context seems to be the services which allow replay and deliver content over TCP/IP, vs the realtime internet TV services which just push over UDP and have minimal buffering.

Re: Euro 2020 games "delay"

Thanks for all the answers, I thought cable tv was now dead in CH and satellite made obsolete by internet-tv but I guess that's the explanation.

I just hope there is not another Italy-France or Italy-Swtizerland so I don't have to worry about "sound spoilers"

(well being in Geneva maybe Italy-Portugal could also be problematic...)

there is a worst-case scenario that you may notice a France-Switzerland game this weekend............albeit half an hour late

Re: Euro 2020 games "delay"

First world problem but this whole thing has always been a hassle... if you watch any 'live' sports over an internet connection you have to 'isolate' yourself from any other communications (including the neighbours).

Re: Euro 2020 games "delay"

I had the opposite phenomenon during Switzerland-Turkey on Sunday. I was watching on RTS2 via Swisscom TV, but all the big cheering coming from outside was about 15 seconds later than when I saw the goals. Presumably the "fan zones" use a transmission medium with even bigger delays than internet TV?

I suspect your TV isn't "internet TV" but the fanzone TV was. Yeeeeeeeah.

Could well be that I'm getting the definitions wrong, admittedly :-)

It's not about lagging, etc.

Some broadcasters choose to have a 'broadcast profanity delay' of up to 30 seconds on their live broadcasts. It just gives technicians a slight chance to edit out something offensive.

When I was broadcasting my live radio show each week back in Australia (on community radio, from 10:30 - midnight) the standard is that the broadcast starts in synch with reality and then gradually "builds in" a seven-second delay, and there's a "panic button" on the panel I could hit to just dump the last seven seconds. I doubt tv has the same, but perhaps they do - just starting with a delay would be easier, though, I guess.

This technique was great to stop accidental profanity, but if somebody really wanted to swear they could just do it twice - the first time I'd kill it with my seven seconds, but there'd be none stored for the second time. I had one caller determined to do that once, but when I dumped the seven seconds I also killed their phone line ...
