iOS DDG is a browser.

Internet privacy depends on what you want to achieve. The greater your belief of needs in this area are, the more you need to do.

Search: DDG or Startpage
Browser: search for uBlock and cookie deletion plugins and install them

Using the same VPN will be close to not using a VPN unless you want to appear somewhere else. Limited value IMO. If you're really worried, surf from a VM and close it down not saving changes in state.

It's a classic see-saw; the more privacy you believe you want, the less convenience you will have.
Just like with any other personal investment. Only we got so lazy and comfortable, that it got forgotten.

Re: Internet Privacy Worries

You used EF to say people shouldn't use the EF . I think that the min one gets a smartphone and not just for playing online chess with people or checking the weather - the interwebz overlords gotcha. If they want to sort through my chess moves, workout tips, running shoes, exotic recipes, sewing patterns, research papers, train delays, jokes and memes..they can be my guest. I take their search results algorithms (which are mostly off, they'd have hire humans for this to be closer to the reality) with a grain of salt.

So far, I am grateful that we have members, whatever they come with, and not bots.

Re: Internet Privacy Worries

Thanks for the tips and information above and guidance about protecting yourself online. I will follow all the steps. I wish I had done earlier.

So, you don't like that people sell your data and you don't get any money in return and your suggestion is then to pay for a service (VPN), so people can't get your data?

Aham, makes absolutely sense.
I wonder here if you are confused perhaps from seeing the words 'being paid' and 'paying', and then for some reason conflating a connection between them to provide evidence in your mind of a contradiction. Or maybe I have misunderstood! But anyway, paying for a service, like a lock on a door, is a good idea I think. I wish I had done it earlier tho.

Also btw I understand the posters here saying 'it's how it is' 'they are providing a service' 'nothing is free' but I respectfully disagree. I find it quite wrong that people so easily bend over for What Is, and don't even want a conversation about What Could Be and dare I say What Should.

There has never been a conversation in govt about defining who's data is it anyway. No philosophical or legal boundaries established. Just a quick monopolostic takeover of the internet by companies who bankroll all sides of the political spectrum more than the industrialists of the gilded ages so called.

Yes they do and it's been on going for years. You have been asleep.

Re: Internet Privacy Worries

It's a conversation far bigger than any government at this point in time, unfortunately, because so many private and public companies now gather personal data about individuals. Eveything is a computer gathering personal data. There's a monetary value to data about people, hence so many non-IT companies banking on using all the data they have under their purview to grow their businesses, and speaking constantly on stages about the treasure trove of data they have on people.

We're far beyond who owns the data – it'll never again be possible to think that way, I would say. The argument is currently to what degree companies must take measures to anonymise the data they have (mindful anonymity is not possible, so each measure is simply to make it a bit harder for the source to be revealed, and the companies will do as little as they can get away with), and in what ways they can monetise it year after year, if people signed a consent form based on a specific set of circumstances way-back-when, and didn't sign a general release.

Theres no need to be mean or rude. You wouldnt dare talk like that to someone over the fence. Youre basically telling me to leave because I am not so informed as you? I think i said on my first post that I have just realised this about internet privacy and started a conversation. Your generic mean response just says so much about you I think,

Anyway, when i said WhatShould and Could be I didnt just mean the 'wise' people who say 'it is how it is' but are just really cowards to bend over and take it ... you can find a POV for anything online. I really also meant n parliaments and govts. I must have missed that debate. Maybe you can refresh my memory of that debate and the govt debates about the legal boundaries of data that took in a wider philosphical view than those presented by the tech corporations. Like maybe actual philosphers presenting to govt blue sky ideas about data ownership and what it could be/ should be. O f course it didnt happen! All there was was tech giants presenting theirideas and using orthodox business dictats to come to these conclusions. Or maybe you can link to this kind of debatre that has aparently being going on for years.

Theres a blurry line btw between paranoia and well grounded skeptcism. I think everyne knows that.

But otoh, talking of well founded internet paranoia
... why do I have red marks next to my name?

Ive only been here ten minutes !
