Best home internet service Vaud

Hi All
It's still early, but doing my research.

When we get our home, we will want internet, so a few questions:
1. How long does it generally take to get Internet up and running? I ask this because there's varied length of time to get internet hooked up around the globe. In our experience: New York took about a week from signing up. Jakarta took about ten days. And Japan took about two months from sign up.
Any tips and advice are welcome.

2. We plan to use a dedicated router for our openVPN to work with a Roku Ultra so we can watch Japanese/US programming. Our current system in Japan has a provider (softbank) provided router and we bridge (piggyback) our VPN router off of that. I am imagining that this would be possible in Switzerland as well. Any reasons that it might not work?

3. Any Internet providers to recommend or to avoid? I have no idea of the players in Switzerland and the way they operate.
Thanks!

The main problem with openVPN is that it works on top of transport layer in user space and hence it's slow. It has tcp and udp options, but usually everything defaults to tcp that is slow.

Wireguard is a kernel module since recent kernels and has much lower overhead than openVPN.

Unfortunately there are not many routers that support it.

Depends if your new home already has a fiber port (or some other port) installed or not. If not it can take a few weeks for them to survey and install one if you're in a fiber area and the house doesn't already have it.

Once mine was fitted in my apartment it took a couple of weeks to get registered on the main database but once it was registered it only took 3 or 4 days after that to be up and running with an ISP with a 10Gbit connection (in my case Sunrise).

We use Net+ https://www.netplus.ch/#/startup For our TV, Internet and telephone landline. It’s the local cable operator. No problems and they are quite responsive.

You can use Comparis to get an idea pn prices. https://en.comparis.ch/telecom/zuhause/default

Re: Best home internet service Vaud

Services are bundled, usually if you choose a supplier it's the same cables, it's the billing and deal varies so it can pay to shop around as often the biggest difference between operators tends to be the price (maybe Salt is the exception, people on here complain about service issues when something goes wrong) with special offers from time to time, especially if you want TV and a mobile phone contract as a bundle. Most have English websites if it helps.

Companies, like Swisscom, Sunrise etc, can tell you if fibre it's available or not at an address, if you have one yet (https://www.sunrise.ch/en/residentia...e/we-home.html). Once you do get one, connection is usually a few days, moving within Switzerland it was always possible to get it working the day I moved in etc but this might be harder if you fly in.

I haven't done it but in Switzerland it seems you can use the supplied router to put VPN on it, search for the provider, eg Swisscom etc and VPN, perhaps someone else knows. Instead I use VPN on a device and cast and with this Japanese TV is fine, even NHK Plus... if you have your subscription, or a friend can spare theirs.

Thanks... this is super helpful! My next set of questions elsewhere will be about cellphones! Knowing that they bundle internet will be helpful.
