What's the Catch [Sunrise Mobile Subscription]?

I am about to switch away from Swisscom in November, into something unlimited everything (calls, data, EU-wide).

At present, I am looking at the SUNRISE We Mobile L plan and I am confused. On the one hand, they say 24mo minimum contract duration, whereafter price doubles. On the other hand, the terms of termination are 60 days' advance notice.

So what's the catch?

P.S.I am suspicious, as I had a horrible experience with UPC a while back, and now apparently Sunrise and UPC are part of the same group

You need to cancel latest 60 days before the 24 month contract period ends.

Re: What's the Catch [Sunrise Mobile Subscription]?

The two years is fixed. After that you revert to normal terms - i.e. double the amount, 60 days notice for cancellation.

Typically they would charge you the abo dues for the entire contract duration.....

Re: What's the Catch [Sunrise Mobile Subscription]?

The other catch is the coverage of course..

Swisscom tends to just work.. Sunrise doesn't work where I live, unless standing in the corner of the garden holding the phone up high.

Also abroad, France for example.. Was recently on a campsite just a couple of hours away. Signal was un-usable on Bouygues telecom. I have Swisscom and I just flipped between the other French operators until one worked well. A friend who has Sunrise couldn't switch to the others, stuck with no working signal.

But I guess you know that and changing for a good reason.

What John_H said.

I had to cancel Sunrise when we moved some years ago due to lack of signal at home. Lycamobile piggy-back Swisscom and I have no problem…

Yeah, I was going to say that the only catch is that it is Sunrise

Sunrise is straight-forwardly lying on their website. I would never trust them again.

Re: What's the Catch [Sunrise Mobile Subscription]?

Wow, thank you so much - really good inputs.

Some context to my "switch" - ages ago when I joined the current employer, I ported my personal number. Leaving the company, I am taking my number with me. So, I am "moving away" from Swisscom which is the company provider, and into something else: do not feel married to a brand, but am a data hog and often taking weekend trips around Europe by car, where kids stream off my hotspot. This is why unlimited data in EU is important to me.

AbFab and John_H, I will go check who is using the Swisscom network and cross my fingers unlimited data doesn't cost an arm and a leg

EDIT >
I just noticed that Lyca and Swisscom have twin plans, for example the Lyca Abo 40 and the Swissscom InOne go. Any benefits to going Lyca vs Swisscom?

Re: What's the Catch [Sunrise Mobile Subscription]?

I used Lyca for a long time and it worked just fine.. But i often forgot to top it up or pay it or renew a plan or whatever.. So I switched to Swisscom InOne so that i have that peace of mind that it's all automatic.

The swisscom plan is pretty much unlimited. Unlimited data in CH, unlimited in Europe with first 40gb/month at high speed.. We are in FR at regularly and we are big data users too, my two kids stream off my hotspot constantly and in reality we've never noticed a data cap or slow down or an extra charge..

Re: What's the Catch [Sunrise Mobile Subscription]?

What the others have said. My employer chose sunrise based on their advertised coverage.

We've had to deploy repeaters in the office, as otherwise you would be forced to connect to wifi as there was no signal.

At home - same story, barely any signal on the ground or first floor. Garden is a bit hit and miss.

Drive to the office has two deadzones.

Train from Zurich to anywhere has MANY deadzones and calls constantly dropping, as well as audio quality being generally cr@p.

The funny part is - when we complained to sunrise, they told us it was normal for signal not to work and get dropped frequently on trains.... but this happened quite rarely on swisscom (usually related to tunnels).

Re: What's the Catch [Sunrise Mobile Subscription]?

I had similar issues @Spinal

I ultimately canceled and switched back to Swisscom out of my own pocket - let me tell you though, incredible hoops I had to go through to accomplish that and Sunrise was blocking/penalizing me throughout

In the end, I succeeded without any penalties but it was no picnic

Re: What's the Catch [Sunrise Mobile Subscription]?

Switched to the Sunrise WeMobile plan about 8 months ago. I concur with the poor coverage issues. I often have problems in Germany and France too.

However, a big plus for me has been the unlimited US & Canada add-on for CHF35/month add'l for unlimited data/phone/text. As I am unexpectedly taking care of a family member in US, making lots of phone calls to doctors,etc.. & need to keep in touch with home, it has been brilliant to have.

Funny that Sunrise works much better in Miami than in Switzerland. So I think that tells you what you need to know!

Lyca works well on the swisscom network, but hotspot is not possible, blocked by carrier.
