The Nintendo Switch Current / Future Owners' Thread

Hi all,

Since we have the PS5 thread of the same ilk, I thought I would create a switch one, as although I have both consoles, I find I am playing the Switch waaaay more often (limited free time due to toddler and fighting for share of the TV in the living room where PS5 is conncected!).

I wanted to give a shout out to Metroid Dread - I've not played any of the previous outings in the series, despite being the correct vintage to have played all of them! I was obviously aware of the Metroid(vania) style of game, but wasn't sure it appealed.

I can happily say I am loving it so far - I die a fair amount, but not an offputting amount - bosses seem about the right difficulty and you rarely have to backtrack far if you do die. Thumbs up.

I had previously worked my way through Original Sin Divinity 2 and again despite being a newbie to the franchise, and worrying that the controls would be too fiddly in comparison to the PC version it's ported from - I again thoroughly enjoyed it.

What's everyone else playing?

Might be waiting a while!

It is for sure not a certainty, but I guess it might make sense that it ties in with Zelda BotW2 - I hope so! Or at least 1440p, come on Nintendo, help a brother out!

Re: The Nintendo Switch Current / Future Owners' Thread

Mine's back in the UK so I only get to play it when I'm back there with the kids (4 and 6) who are huge fans and love to play Mario Kart multi-player against each other.

They also like to play the recent Super Mario 3d World although they struggle a bit still with the 3d gaming but it'll come in time.

Mine's also a very old model so has CFW and all the emulator stuff on so I also enjoy a bit of Retropie and some arcade classics on there along with some classic console stuff from SNES and Megadrive/Genesis.

A shout out from me for the retro football style of "Super Arcade Football" - one for fans of Kick Off, Sensible Soccer, etc.

Otherwise I have got back into Mario Kart a bit after completing Pokemon Shield and BotW. Also played some multiplatform games like Retromania Wrestling and the South Park games.

One plus for the Switch is that a casual gamer can be kept pretty busy by just trying all the demos - tried the Metroid one last night.

Re: The Nintendo Switch Current / Future Owners' Thread

I picked up a Switch for Xmas 2020, and the family and I play it quite regularly. Super fun to pick up simple games like Luigi's Mansion, Mario Odyssey/Kart/Tennis/Golf and play it with friends.

When it comes to playing Singleplayer games: Breath of the Wild, Metroid Dread, and Rabbid Kingdoms Battle entertain me endlessly. Now my PS4 collects dust and I'm looking to sell it.

Re: The Nintendo Switch Current / Future Owners' Thread

We still have a working Wii and enjoy it next to the PS5.

I am putting my hand in the air, as someone confused with the Switch. If we want to have 4 players, do we buy 1 switch (supposedly with 1 left and 1 right joycon included) + 2 extra joy-con controllers?
If we wish to play Mario Cart, do we buy dummy plastic steering wheels to host the joycons, or something completely different?
Last year, while desperately waiting for the PS5, I walked in a MediaMarkt and asked above question and the consultant quickly racked up a pile of boxes that amounted to 700-ish chufs and quickly cooled off my enthusiasm.

Above is a detailed way of asking a simple question: if we four wish to play our fav games *together*, what hardware do we require at a minimum?

Hi Defcon,

In theory you would only need two controllers which break up into 4 single joy-cons. Your enjoyment may vary with that approach though, as if you have spade hands like me, they are definitely too small and fiddly.

I personally only ever use the pro controller, which is more like your standard PS or XB controller (more comfortable than either though, I would say).

You can mix and match any way you want though, so two pro controllers and a joy-con split in 2, for 4 players, or 3 joy con bits (i.e. using 3/4 joy cons from 2 controllers) and a pro controller.

You do not need the extra peripherals he's suggesting, you can get them if you think they are more fun, etc, but they are certainly not obligatory for playing anything*

*Ring fit adventure does need the ring peripheral, Mario Kart does NOT need the wheel

As others have said 2 Joy-cons will do the job. I play with my kids regularly with half a Joy-con each but I will say it's much comfier for me with my big adult mitts to have the Joy-con in one of the plastic steering wheels than it is standalone as they're pretty small, so it's worth considering some of those as they're not expensive (you can get non-Nintendo ones way cheaper).

Re: The Nintendo Switch Current / Future Owners' Thread

Anyone else noticed how Switch became an expensive paperweight after getting Steam Deck?

Can't go back to Nintendo anymore, not even for the OLED screen.

Re: The Nintendo Switch Current / Future Owners' Thread

Actually my daughter plays a 1k times more than I do, but like playing switch more and more, but getting used to the handling with the letters, x, y, lc, lr and so on is quite difficult to me as a new user
