What BitTorrent client are you using?

I was using Azureus v2.5 until recently but switched to μtorrent as I heard it's less of a memory hog. It turns out that it only uses about 7MB/3MB when minimised as opposed to Azureus which uses about 10 times as much.

It's a simple client, and has all the functionality you could want really. What clients are others using, and which benefits do they have?

My friend should really get a proper one.
Opera just doesn't cut it for serious stuff.

Which platform are you running on? My mate who runs Azureus on a Mac gets annoyed that his computer and bandwidth all grind to a halt. Heck, when Azureus is running, he can't even use VLC to watch a movie. Pah.

Re: What BitTorrent client are you using?

WinXP here. Try this comparison for ideas on which clients run on the Mac OS.

Using Azureus noticeably slowed down my machine too, maybe not quite to the same extent as it did for your mate though

Re: What BitTorrent client are you using?

Bittorrent all seems to be very clunky and unsatisfactoy still. My re-exploration was prompted by another thread on how to use 10mbps cable to actually get good content over the internet in Switzerland. Leaving aside the copyright issues and the fact I would be happy to pay for the referred to content to have it NOW on my pc.

The good: managed to download TV series season X in two files overnight total about 3.5gig. Downside: not a single episode can be reassembled from the RAR files, all have one corrupt package. Total waste of time. Summary: Right now this technology is for tinkerers. Or am I missing a trick?

UPDATE: Well it is definitely for tinkerers. Having got into the bowels of my routers and firewalls and having my ports forwarding on all cylinders and tried a few clients out, and found a few decent sites (try netforbeginners.about.com/od/peersharing/a/torrent_search.htm for a review of 35 top ones) I am finding the shows I want and achieving download rates of 200+ KBps, its starting to make more sense...

Re: What BitTorrent client are you using?

I've only rarely maxed out my connection, and when I did it was usually either some US university or a lot of Skandis who were seeding.

Getting corrupted files is something I haven't encountered in ages to be honest. I go on the assumption that if there's lot's of seeders, the content should be fine, after all there's no point in seeding something that doesn't work.

Re: What BitTorrent client are you using?

Win XP has a connection limit of 10 TCP connections.
You get an error in the System event log.
This nice man has a hack to increase this limit.

so far i have downloaded quite a few TV series (whole seasons and eposodes) and full-length movies, and while i have come across the occassional corrupt file etc., generally most has been good viewing quality, so - don't give up, there's plenty of potential!

If I were the copyright holders of major shows I would just maintain seeds and put out loads of corrupt files with my shows name on them.. how many corrupt files will people bother downloading before going and looking for something else.

Re: What BitTorrent client are you using?

Hi all, didn't feel like starting a new thread to ask a question. I am currently living in Canada where sharing music and other intellectual property is frowned upon but not legally enforced. I may be moving to Switzerland in May and I was wondering what the copyright laws are like in Switzerland?

Re: What BitTorrent client are you using?

well, personally of course i do not dabble in such things, but my mate says he's been downlaoding anything that moves for the last 7 months and no problems... plus his mate, from work, who's a local, has been doing the same pretty much forever (TV ans movies both), and again no prob. i guess as long as its not swiss companies losing money over this, they don't mind too much... :-)

p.s. an excellent TV site is http://www.eztvefnet.org/, and a general torrent search site is www.btmon.com.

my mate says enjoy (-:
