Cablecom "Homepage" access via FTP

I have a personal homepage residing on Cablecom's Hispeed server, the type you create yourself then upload and is visible using this type of URL:
http://homepage.hispeed.ch/name

I havent updated it since last year and it seems that FTP access has been removed at some point. I saw a "news" item on their website (that I can't find again on the Cablecom website) saying as much, it also contained information on their changes to "Online Storage". Unlike the old web based file manager, the new Online Storage doesnt show the "homepage" directory required to load the personal homepage files. I've messed around with a few FTP programs and nothing will let me connect to ftp.hispeed.ch

I found quite a few references on Cablecom's website stating how FTP & the homepage function should work, but fear that they are obsolete and not been updated (it is Cablecom you know).
http://www.cablecom.ch/en/index/faq_...m?lan=en&id=20
https://service.cablecom.ch/scp-weba...ublish&lang=en
http://gollum.hispeed.ch/h4h/de/supp...lpage_ftp.html

So basically, at the moment I have a functioning personal webpage that I am unable to access or update.

I have contacted Cablecom support via email and online forms, but based on prior experience expect a slow response or none at all. Dont really want to go through their hold-from-hell helpline either. So, if anyone out there has had some experience with this recently, I'd appreciate some advice.

Thanks, I'm happy to hear that it is still working. I'll have another bash at it and see if it is something my end like a firewall setting or so stopping the connection.

As you can tell, I'm no expert, just an occasional but long term user

While you actually put in your own hispeed/swissonline email address and pasword, the server is actually as shown, not your homepage...

Yes, that's what I have been doing. This is how my FTP program (Filezilla) and Jalbum were set up from previous successful usage from late last year. ftp.hispeed.ch also worked and is included in some of Cablecom's documentation, but also isnt working for me now.

I've set up Core FTP as per Cablecom's instructional PDF and that isnt working either. Gives the following message, on another PC & interent provider:
Resolving homepage.hispeed.ch...
Connect socket #556 to 80.109.240.78, port 21...
Can't establish connection --> homepage.hispeed.ch:21 @ Mon Sep 08 16:01:56 2008 (0-5)

Hmmmmm. This is when computer stuff really annoys me, wasting hours.

Re: Cablecom "Homepage" access via FTP

OK so after much hair pulling I've found that if I turn off Windows Firewall I can use FTP to Hispeed. Adding the FTP program to the Firewall Exceptions list isn't enough to do it. Next step is to get a permanent fix rather than this dodgy work around

BTW this is the Cablecom message that sent me off on the wrong track that they didnt allow FTP any longer.

Re: Cablecom "Homepage" access via FTP

Hello,

I have a question about activating a Cablecom homepage, it's not strictly related to FTP but hopefully this is an appropriate thread! Of course, I have tried to call Cablecom but my French is not quite up to explaining the problem & I'm still waiting for a call back from someone who speaks English.

I want to use my Cablecom personal homepage, which I believe would be found at:
http://homepage.hispeed.ch/myname (using "myname" as an example)

I have successfully registered myname@hispeed.ch at registration.hispeed.ch.

I created my page (index.html) & apparently successfully uploaded it, using FTP to ftp.hispeed.ch, loging in as myname@hispeed.ch. This all worked smoothly & I can see it if I do a folder listing on the server.

However, when I try to access http://homepage.hispeed.ch/myname/index.html

I just get 404 (page not found) error...

Both ftp.hispeed.ch & homepage.hispeed.ch resolve to the same IP address (80.109.240.78)

Does anyone know if there is an additional, undocumented step that is needed to get this to work?

Thanks :-)

Re: Cablecom "Homepage" access via FTP

It is necessary that the file index.html be in the folder /homepage on your remote site.

Have a look at http://www.upc-cablecom.ch/anleitung_myhomepage.pdf
