Choosing a set top box

So I was considering buying some kit to set up a satellite dish on the balcony in my new apartment. Then later, looking at the website of the cable provider at my new place, I noticed that I can receive most of the channels (the ones worth watching) I would receive with a FTA satellite set up from the cable provider - for free - provided I had my own DVB-C receiver. Of course the cable provider sells a couple of boxes but they are way overpriced so I am looking to shop for my own.

These are my criteria for choosing a box:

- HDTV capable.
- EPG and PVR capable
- USB 2.0 and / or eSATA for external hard disk
- Capability to connect a satellite dish at a later stage.

I am very interested in these two boxes:

Dreambox DM800 C

or

IPBox 900 HD

Both boxes have a linux OS and both fulfill the first 3 criteria. The last criteria is confusing me a little though. As near as I can make out the IPbox has DVB-S2, DVB-C, and DVB-T receivers built in and can be used simultaneously. The Dreambox tuner - on the other hand - is only exchangeable, ie. if I wanted to use a DVB-S tuner I would need to buy one and exchange them. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Now the IPBox is about 100 chfs cheaper but I read a review on it and the reviewer was not too impressed by the EPG and PVR functions (as far as I remember). I can't remember exactly why but the reviewer wrote that AB-COM is / was planning to fix the problems with firmware updates. The Dreambox on the other hand is well known and extremely popular. I am leaning towards the Dreambox but need some help deciding.

Or...

Would I maybe be better off buying something cheaper and then getting the latest and greatest Dreambox at a later stage when ready to upgrade to satellite?

Looks like the DM800 has only one slot position, so you can't have multiple tuners. The DM7025 has 2 slots but is not HD.

What you really want is one of these:

But it's still Vapourware

Re: Choosing a set top box

Well thanks. The DM8000 does look super. A couple of unknown traders on toppreise seem to have made announcements of it already although it is not available. They seem to think it will cost in the region of 1490.-!

I guess I would be better off buying the DM800 and a second one for satellite later! Or otherwise a cheap cable box and then change the tuner in the dreambox.
