Mjoy.com:a New Free Sms worldwide on Internet

Hi there,
just read about a new free Sms service from your pc. here is the whole article if you want to investigate and try it. I have not tried it yet, but will soon:

Mobile web portal mjoy.com is offering a groundbreaking new service: From now on, any cellphone user can send messages to any phone in the world, unlimited, to all countries and completely free of charge.

"Mjoy is a service for people who want to stop wasting money on communications, mobile services and content," says Oliver Wimmeroth, marketing manager of Venista Holdings, Mjoy's operating company based in Cologne, Germany.
According to Wimmeroth, Mjoy is functional on all common handsets available today and does not require the installation of applications or advanced technological knowledge.
"Users simply access http://www.mjoy.com, and they're all set," he explains.
But free messaging is only the beginning: Mjoy will give the mobile web a major boost, Wimmeroth says.
"Mjoy is the place to go if users want communication, social networking, shopping, widgets, news, as well as fun videos, pictures and sounds. Already, they find fun free content for their entertainment at mjoy.com."
Convenient, user-friendly administration
Users registering at http://www.mjoy.com can send and receive free SMS text messages at all times.
If they're not yet registered, addressees will receive regular SMS messages. If the persons receiving the message already have an account with Mjoy, they get a direct link to their Mjoy inbox.
This inbox allows a new way of convenient, user-friendly administration of short message communications, sorted by individual conversations with contacts.
But, what's the catch?
It seems, there is no catch. Free of charge for users, the service is financed by advertising banners within the Mjoy portal, accompanying the other services.
"Ads are placed so that they don't disturb user experience. Users can be assured that they will not receive commercial text messages on their phones. Mjoy has bound itself to strict privacy regulations," says Wimmeroth. Currently run in beta mode, Mjoy invites users to try the portal with the free messaging tool and to send in their remarks and ideas. Mjoy is aiming to become the mobile web portal best suited to user demands.

Most mobile operators can and usually do block incoming web-based SMS due to spam. Has this one worked with any of the Swiss operators?

Not working for me yet..... one thing that might be annoying is that when you set your country as CH you get sent to a German language page, no options for French or Italian (or English). Not a massive problem for me but I'm sure it'll annoy the hell out of a lot of other locals

Not to mention the difficulty in retyping that lengthy validation link in your browser.

Oh, is that why it's not working for me. I was trying to connect to that link with my handy!

Hi GrumpyGrapeFruit

On a sidenote;

I tried but gave up on the G3 and G4 that I got off you - I eventually gave it away to an asylum seeker family but after boosting the RAM to 1GB, added as Waicom graphic tablet. I'll stick to Linux and XP

LeBara isn't really a Swiss operator tho. They use one of the physical radio networks here (Swisscom, Sunrise or Orange...does anyone know which?) and then trunk the calls to their switch in the UK. In a way it's nice that they allow web-based SMS, since you can send SMS to them for free, but the down-side is that if you can do it, so can the hordes of spammers

Re: Mjoy.com:a New Free Sms worldwide on Internet

That's strange. I never had that web to SMS service ( or email to SMS for that matter ) whenever I log on to www.lebara.ch - I think Lebara here piggy backs on Sunrise ( my number starts with a 076 as well ) but they have a much cleaner web interface compared to Sunrise.

From Lebara, calls to CH are expensive but reasonable if calling to an overseas number, hence it is sold in a lot of ethnic shops / outlets.

Re: Mjoy.com:a New Free Sms worldwide on Internet

I've enclosed screenshots - it is possible with both Lebara ( CH ) and Sunrise. I've managed to change the interface from DE to EN, each SMS received has an ad tail in DE pointing back to the site. Average times to receive 30 seconds.

Oh, you mean Mjoy is an application that you install on your phone? Oh, then yea, I guess it should work with all operators. All the web-based SMS I've seen before was just sending an SMS from a web site to any phone number as a regular SMS. This Mjoy is something different. It's not really an SMS in a pure technical sense, since it's being sent from an Mjoy server to an Mjoy client...or something like that.

Re: Mjoy.com:a New Free Sms worldwide on Internet

Actually, it is not an application, but works from just about any plain browser on your internet enabled phone ( usually a smartphone ). It might work from a PC - am trying to get this done but all I get is a registration screen when I visit the website. On my phone, it works like a charm.
