Telephoning Switzerland from the U.K. - costs

What Cablecom charges for telephoning the U.K. is ludicrously cheap compared with what BT and other U.K. telephone service providers charge my family and friends to phone us here in Switzerland.

My family frequently complain that they have been charged 17, 18 or 20 pounds for a chat.
We pay a few CHF for a call of a similar duration.

Skype et al is not an option for some of my family as they live in the middle of nowhere and data transmission speeds with ADSL are really bad.

Normally I just call them back when they phone.

What do you recommend, in the way of clever numbers with which they can prefix their calling, or with calling plans, to reduce the call cost?

Thanks

Look at Rebtel. Cost from UK to CH is £ 0.017 per minute for a land line in CH and £ 0.194 for phoning a mobile in CH.

If Skype is OK at your end, get a SkypeIn number in the same area code as most of your relatives and then they only have to make a local UK call to contact you.

Re: Telephoning Switzerland from the U.K. - costs

I'm a fan of the whole billiger telefonerien system online. See below for a few links- I can call Sydney for 4 rappen a minute, which is nothing. Is there a similar british thing?

They dial a number, which then charges a very cheap per minute rate to call overseas? Worth considering. If not, phone cards are cheap, easy to use.

Swiss sites for cheap overseas calls. Check through these often because they have weekly special rates to specific places- last week, Sydney was 1 rappen a minute for me. Oh and please add some if you find any others that are good!

I have a Skype Unlimted Subscription, its costs GBP1.95 a month for unlimited calls to UK landlines and 0800 numbers and i get a UK landline number with it too, so family can call for free or a local rate call. (I think BT offer free local and national calls on all plans now at weekends ) Link HERE

Then I bought a netgear SPH200D Dual mode Skype DECT phone which plugs into my router so when people call from the UK it rings like a normal call! Link HERE

Hope this helps.

Re: Telephoning Switzerland from the U.K. - costs

Exactly, the UK is very competitive on this thing... I would say even more so than Switzerland.

It's been a while since I lived there, so I wouldn't know what companies to choose from, but you should also consider that call quality may differ from the various providers.

Another thing to know is how to actually make the call... some companies want to take over the entire phone line, others allow you to access them via a short code (i.e. a prefix number before dialling), others have a little box that you plug in between the phone and the main line that supposedly dials the short code for you. It can be a real headache if your family or friends are not so tech savy. If they're with BT for example consider looking at deals from BT that provide cheaper international calling rates for just a few exra pounds per month.

Other option is that you use VoIP and have a UK number. I for example have a cordless phone that plugs into my cablecom broadband connection. I have then have signed up to a UK VoIP company so that I have a Manchester 0161 number that people can call as if I was in the UK. Call quality is great. Have a look at Gradwell and something like one of these phones from Siemens.

Re: Telephoning Switzerland from the U.K. - costs

Loads of options. Thank you to everyone. It's take me some time to go through it all but I'm sure to find something that works for me.

As it's lots of different people phoning me, the options I am interested in are those where either the other user dials a prefix or I install hardware at my end.
I don't want any of them to have to do anything too difficult and certainly not to have to install anything.

Regarding call quality, any personal dis-recommendations / recommendations with any of the above methods that people have used?

Re: Telephoning Switzerland from the U.K. - costs

The call quality of the Skype phone seems to be very good. Very rarely do we get a bad call, if we do, we tend to hang up and redial, which fixes it.

WE have the tesco internet phone previously mentioned and are happy with it. For 2 quid a month we get free evening and weekend calls. Plus we have a UK number to call Sky with :-)
