Unlocked iPhone with Sunrise Service

I was wondering if anyone has an unlocked iPhone with Sunrise service...
Can you have the unlimited data plan from sunrise for 49 CHF (Internet mobile T@ke Away Max) and also a voice plan (Sunrise zero or zero plus) ???

I have an unlocked iPhone 3G and would like to switch to Sunrise.

Re: Unlocked iPhone with Sunrise Service

Hey man,

I work at Sunrise albeit in the IT department...
You cannot get the iPhone with a Sunrise contract but many people have iPhones and are using Sunrise. The way to do this is get an unlocked iPhone (www.digitec.ch around 850CHF) then go and get your takeaway prepaid of Sunrise zero with an added data bundle (probably cheaper) and Viala, you have an Iphone on Sunrise... You could also then sell of the phone you get with the Sunrise contract and recouperate some of the iPhone costs.

Cheers,

Nils

Re: Unlocked iPhone with Sunrise Service

I already have an unlocked iPhone. My question was: Can you subscribe to the Internet Mobile TAKE AWAY MAX plan for 49chf and have unlimited data?

Did you ever find out if this is possible? I'm wondering the same and can't find any answers.

A friend of mine has an iPhone with Sunrise.
Another iPhone user put a Lebara chip in it, which is also from Sunrise...

Re: Unlocked iPhone with Sunrise Service

I also have a Sunrise SIM with the prepaid voice plan. The original post was asking whether it's possible to use the T@ke Away data plan(which is typically meant for laptop computers) on the iPhone, ideally without having to switch SIM cards.

Hopefully the OP can chime in?

I've gone to Sunrise and asked about it, but My German isn't good enough for technical speak, and the one guy who spoke English acted like he doesn't know what I'm talking about, that they don't sell iPhones.

Re: Unlocked iPhone with Sunrise Service

Yes you can use it, that's 100% sure, but I don't know exactly the tarification of the call. You may ask directly to the phone support, you will find people speacking English I think, here's the phone number: 0800 707 707.

I don't think that we can combine voice plan and unlimited data plan, you have to choose one.

With Sunrise you can have 250Mb for 7.50CHF with any voice plan (i'm not 100% sure, but with mine I could have it). For me it was enaough.

Re: Unlocked iPhone with Sunrise Service

Hi Guys,
Sunrise does not supply iPhones as such but you can still go to Digitec and get the phone either cash or by taking out a Sunrise contract with a digitec iphone, and you can also keep your number, no problem.

Any more questions, please ask.

From digitec could you also keep your prepaid number? And make it as a postpaid subscription with iphone?

Hey,

Yes if you go to Digitec you can do a number transfer in order to keep your number, but if you are on prepaid and you want to keep your number and convert to postpaid you have to pick a contract on which the iphone is available, otherwise just get it cash. Around 800 CHF for the 8GB version.

It is possible, but you will need 2 contracts, one for the phone service and one for the data services... Gotta love Swiss Inflexibility....

yeah it's bizarre. OK I'm going to call Sunrise today to get the details, but just so I know before they steer me in the wrong direction, can you have this dual contract with a single SIM? It's still a great idea as long as I don't have to switch cards all the time or try to hack a dual SIM. For 80fr a month I'd get unlimited Sunrisenetz, Festnetz and data, and 150 free SMS per month for signing up online with Flat Classic. And if I can get tethering going, I can extend it to my laptop. good deal.

BTW anyone considering Digitec, I'd check out what's available on Ricardo and eBay and do some long term figuring. I actually ordered a 3Gs with the Sunrise abo from Digitec, and the shipment was delayed. Luckily it gave me some time to look around. I figured out that the cost of the iPhone, plus the extra 25Fr per month on the abo, plus a 2 year contract for the lowest price wasn't really such a deal in the long term. I found a new unopened 3Gs on Ricardo for 749Fr, and now I'm free to get a shorter contract or even stay on prepaid if I want. I figured I'll save about 300Fr over 2 years. It's a matter of paying more upfront or much more over time.

Hi have you got any update with this?
I finally talked to someone from Sunrise today. It takes forever to get through on the phone, and the lines at the shops have been too long when I was there. Anyway, the guy I spoke to today said it isn't possible to use the t@keaway with the iPhone. I don't really believe him 100%, but if that's their official stance, then I don't know how it would be possible to combine them on a single sim card.

Did someone say they got this working? Maybe we can get a little more info about it. right now it looks like the most they'll offer is 250MB with FlatMax. I wonder why they're not willing to sell an unlimited data for smartphones? They could charge the same as for t@keaway and usage would be much lower than with a notebook. Anyway, I sent feedback to that effect today after I got off the phone.

If my wife didn't already have an abo with Sunrise I'd be defecting to Orange now.

Re: Unlocked iPhone with Sunrise Service

Something is up with Sunrise and the iPhone. Anyone "official" I speak to tells me that Take Away doesn't work on the iPhone. But everyone else says it does. After getting the runaround and no clear answers, I decided the best way to test using Take Away was to just get the card and try it. So I just got a prepaid SIM only (I told them I had a netbook with a SIM slot so they wouldn't give me the iPhone speech) which is free and comes with 5fr credit. That gave me an hour and 20 min to test it out at 3fr/hr, that's right, data at an hourly rate. It just keeps getting more ridiculous.

Anyway, there was a little weirdness setting it upbut I finally got it going by enabling both EDGE and 3G, and leaving the settings>general>network>cellular data network settings blank, not with "internet" or "sunrise" APN as you'll find if you search online. It might work no matter what you have in there, I don't know. I ran out of time before I could test whether MMS could work, but I did verify that SMS works.

This is interesting. I looked at the registration paper that I signed, and the SIM is assigned a phone number. SMS definitely works at 10rp each. Phone calls definitely don't work. You get a message that the service is blocked if you try to make a call. I'm sure this is just a matter of finding someone who would be willing to flip the switch on, and the same goes for activating a data service on a regular phone plan. It just strikes me as bizarre that they don't want you to pay them more money for the service.

So I'm actually thinking of turning my iPhone into a data device and using sms exclusively and carrying around a ****** pitty phone for making calls. Or maybe I'll try out one of those dual sim hacks (quite literally, since you have to cut up your sim card).

It's so silly the measures we have to take to get in Switzerland what has been around for 10 years in the US (and the rest of the world).

Oh, and btw for those who think 250MB per month is "enough", I just blew 20.5MB testing this out for an hour. All I did was check email, flipped through 10 websites, streamed 20 seconds of music and watched one YouTube video. I don't think so.

Re: Unlocked iPhone with Sunrise Service

Hi guys,
I hope its ok to use this thread to post this question. I am a sunrise customer and an iPhone-wannabe. Im off to the states next month. Is it worth my while to buy an iPhone and bring it back - is it substantially cheaper than dataquest (which is circa 900chf)? Has anyone done this? Can I unlock the phone to use a sunrise sim? What about chargers and other accessories will they work here?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Re: Unlocked iPhone with Sunrise Service

I'm not really sure if they're cheaper in the US anymore. I'd check eBay vs Ricardo here. I got my 3Gs on Ricardo for 749fr. Certainly buying it unlocked from Apple or one of the providers will be really expensive no matter where you get it. Digitec here sells them for over 1000fr without a contract.

Unlocking it for Sunrise will be no problem.

But you could bring back Doritos, Fig Newtons, and a box of Triscuits and I'd be happy

That's a great idea, and I'm trying to get it going. It's technically not supposed to work on 3G, but there's a somewhat reliable hack to trick it into thinking it's on wifi. The real problem is data speed and latency. But yes, great idea. I think I'm going to go for it and see how it goes. Worst case, I'm using two different phones and I have broadband for my powerbook.
