Dell Computer Repair

Anyone know of a computer repair shop that will work on a Dell laptop? Mine has a dead screen display and the light needs replacing. I've tried all the fixes suggested on a thread here, but nothing works. Dell wants around 500 chf to send a technician out to fix it, and I'd rather buy a new computer than spend that much. A couple of computer shops I've checked with won't work on Dells. Any ideas?

Re: Dell Computer Repair

Hi, this is common problem with Dell computers, we had the same problem with ours. My husband had taken out an insurance when buying our laptop (I think we paid an extra CHF 500) that covered us for two years.

However when we called Dell and they came to fix this, they still charged us around CHF 200. Dell outsources their repairs to another company, and i'm afraid to tell you only this company (have forgotten the name) has the spare parts for Dell. We tried looking as well for cheaper options but were unsuccesful.

Have you tried Ebay? you should be able to purchase the entire screen assembly for not more than 100 - 200 CHF and then either swap it out yourself or take it to a TV/Radio repair shop. I've replaced cracked/faulty screens on Samsung and Toshiba laptops and it was a doddle.

Re: Dell Computer Repair

Thanks for all the advice on this. Ebony - Your reply answers the question as to why no one works on Dells here. A lesson learned, I think, when buying a Dell and taking it out of the U.S. Laptops are cheap now, so it may be worth it to spring for a new one (non-Dell) rather than pony up for the repair.

I wouldn't say "no one", we still do and turn out to be cheaper than a new machine in most cases if the problems are small. LCD's are the biggest expense it seems.

Definitely buy a new one if it will cost more than 200 CHF to repair... there are some great deals available now.

Daddy, what does FORMATTING DRIVE C: mean?

Bit off topic here but any of you remember the "MacGrouch" a little grouch that came up in the bin in the Mac pre-OSX days?

My little darling daughter found out how to fire up the mac.
Much to her amusement as soon as you put something in the trash and hit delete, he would come up and sing "I love trash" or "I love it because it's trash"

Oh how I LOVED having all that empty space on my harddrive..

Dell laptop?
See there's your problem

If you don't want to go the ebay way, and surely not the Dell way then look out for something new, as at some stage, something else on your Dell will break, bringing you back to the same problem..where to fix it at a good price.

Its like an old car, if stuff starts going ,get rid of it before it costs you more then a new one

Re: Dell Computer Repair

or you can go the ebay/ricardo route and get a trashed computer of the same model as long as the screen works. The advantage to dell is they are very easy to pull apart. They have detailed manuals on their website on how to replace parts such as the screen which even a kid can follow.
