is anyone still on Analog out there?

Hi,

A Cablecom salesperson came to visit me, (damn why did I answer the door?) and said that all of Switzerland was switching to Digital television and everyone had to have a digital box. I think the people in our building probably were the last ones holding on to their analog / antenna connection / cable paid through nebenkosten (additional rental costs).

I guess I could have refused the digital box, but for a bank-breaking 22.50 CHF/month, I guess I could do with some digital tv. I'll try it for 9 months, at least, although I doubt I will be allowed to go down to analog ever again. I really don't watch that much tv, so it will be a test.

Anyone out there still on Analog? Any other non-Cablecom Digital HD TV suckers out there? Is this really my only option? I guess I just need some validation from the old hands here (and some native Swiss, please) to tell me it's alright, you weren't swindled.

Other than the higher quality, for someone who does not watch all that much tv, what are my benefits???

thanks in advance for your thoughtful responses...

Re: is anyone still on Analog out there?

The thing about HD is that there are only about 10 channels that Cablecom offer that are truly HD and most of them show repetitive (but truly pretty and well filmed) flights over the Alps. They have one BBC HD channel which pretty much shows repeats from the best of the weeks programs, the rest of the UK based channels are bog standard, non-HD.

Your options are the standard Swiss TV channels including TSR and TSI or tru Bluewin TV if offered in your area. I personally use Cablecom for one reason only - they have ESPN Europe which feeds my American Football habit, live college and NFL games, but certainly not in HD.

I'd search through the EF archives to glean more info, but you're right about Cablecom, I'd rather have Scientologists and Jehovahs giving me their doormat spiel than those hyenas!

Re: is anyone still on Analog out there?

All Swiss television is switching to digital and, after a certain period, the analog tranmissions stop. This happened in this area about 2 years ago. A digi box to receive the digital cost about CHF 50.- from Interdiscount.

Re: is anyone still on Analog out there?

I still have analogue only Cablecom and if it were not for the fact the fastest ISDN in my area is 3kbs and CC offer 10, I would have dropped CC TV altogether. (You can't have cable internet without TV.)

Throughout most of Switzerland you can get free to air digital DRS/SRG1 & 2 and the repeat channel. Most current TVs have a built in digital receiver...

Re: is anyone still on Analog out there?

That is not nice. If he sold you a box for CHF 22 per month because he said they're switching off the analogue service then in my opinion they're !"$%^&*#.

Cablecom also do a non-recording/regular digital box for CHF 6 per month or for a one off fee for around CHF 150. I guess he sold you the Media Recorder or HD version.

Re: is anyone still on Analog out there?

yeah rdiggle, that's my feeling too.

But I talked with my partner and he seems excited to try it for 9 months, which from what I looked that we can cancel it with the standard 3 month cancellation. (actually I could call within 7 days and cancel it too if I don't feel comfortable with the way I was "sold").

We only have a "HD-Ready" tv anyway so the minimalist HD channels are fine for now.

I got 10% off as I am already a CC internet/phone user and a month free. So all in all 247.50 in a year plus the 1 franc copyright charge per month (!!).

The recording feature actually sounds nice, as one of the main reasons we don't watch too much tv is that we are never home (or are asleep etc.) when the shows we would want to watch are on! (no we don't have our own tape recorder )

Yes you can.

I have Cablecom as Internet Provider, and do not own a TV

Re: is anyone still on Analog out there?

So in Zuerich they shut down the Analog TV signal input and kinda force you to get the expensive digital TV.

Off course you get a better quality, which verifys the extra costs. But for the 2 times i watch TV, i really think this is a Maffia tactic. Next to that I think the basic Public chanels should be available for everyone.

Sorry just wanted to complain

Re: is anyone still on Analog out there?

We asked for a quote to put a satellite on the roof & the verdict was about chf 3,000 which included a hige flat screen tv. Salesman used the "you can get English speaking programmes". Didn't work. Not paying that to get even more channels to zap across. Only got basic tnt channels with crappy reception. No cable available here.

I would not bank on 'better quality', a great deal depends on how compressed the stream is & how it's connected. Many people believe they are watching HD when they are not.

I watch sky TV HD via a dish or internet tunnel to the UK.
