Current Films Online

My mate told me he can watch current movies online for free. So I was over at his house, and sure enough, he was watching a movie that is still out in theaters.

So I started watching him watching Public Enemies, The Hangover, and Burn After Reading. There were still hundreds on his list, along with whole seasons of TV shows.

Do you or any of your mates do this sort of thing?

The resolution was not the best, and audio was like AM radio, but it was the film nevertheless. I heard from another mate that the same movies are downloadable in HD quality for free. Anyone know of anybody that has experience with this sort of thing?

bit torrent

films that are still in the cinema will more the likely be screeners, so someone has smuggled a video camera in then uploaded it to bit torrent or one of the dodgy video hosting sites, quality will be rubbish, audio will be rubbish, it may well be filmed in HD but will look and sound like an old vhs tape you found down the back of the sofa.

Not sure what the situation is in Switzerland, but there are several cases where people have been arrested and are actually serving time for doing this, here in Germany...

In Switzerland, Uploading torrents is a crime, from what i can tell.

Streaming Movies and TV shows should be ok

For streaming, "my mate" recommends;

Surf the Channel

AllUC

Project Free TV

TV Links

For downloading, "my mate" says BitTorrent is handy...

As far as I know, for up/downloading. So they're not after you yet... at least, not for that!

My mate says he uses Azareus to download. But it also "seeds" in the background by default. So then it's illegal to activate the "seeding" functionlity?

Well, it'll be activated by default, but it can be switched off, or at least limited (to zero). But I don't think it's a major deal here at the moment.

I wouldn't worry about it if you're only downloading a film or two...

Phos, mate, go to the cinema to see a film. Take your sweetheart, smuggle in some Prosecco, snog a little.

Turn off the computer and do something less boring instead

(Should you not want to, I could always take her, y'know..?)

there are places on the net that will mask you ip address and make it look like your in the uk (so I Player will work) but the beeb blocks these sites too pretty quickly, so yes its possible but don't expect it to work for long.

just download the program you want to watch from bittorrent, much easier.

I wouldn't mind going for a good movie, but most of the Hollywood junk is hardly worth paying for. Besides, we like watching our movies in bed.

Errr... Is there a problem with that? Did you want to join us or something?

My mate told me it can take days to download a film. Whereas the streams play right away. I wonder if there is another way, perhaps via FTP, that he is not aware of.

LOL depends on your internet connection, if you use a modem at 9600 baud then it will take days, if you use cablecom 25mb broadband it will take about 30 minutes.

the hd streaming is more or less the same size as the d/l size anyway.

ftp / streaming / bittorrent all have to d/l the video so the faster your connection the faster you'll download it.

and you wont get annoying pauses if you d/l the whole thing rather then watching a stream.

True, but generally, the downloads are better quality, Audio and visual (doesn't really matter on a laptop screen, but when you blow it up on a massive TV or projector, it does)

Torrents can take a while, but they run in the background, so it's not as if your mate has to sit there watching it trickle in. Also, the best quality ones tend to have alot of seeders. My mate has often downloaded recent releases in DVD quality in 2-4hours.

Perhaps he hasn't tweaked his Azareus settings optimally. I'll tell him what you said.

Thanks.

We watch TV on Zattoo, especially those channels that are deleted by Cablecom.

for bittorrent,
it also depends what film he is trying to dl, for popular films, eg recent blockbusters, you'll have loads of seeds, so they will come down really really quickly, for some obscure art house film you may only have a couple of seeds world wide, in which case it will take ages as your at the mercy of those 2 seeders being online.

one of my 'mates' had to wait weeks to d/l an album as there was only 1 seed and they where never online
