It would be worth getting a pre-paid of the network you want to go with on contract.

You're not likely to save much over a couple of months, and converting to contract is easier than porting the number especially if you're new. I've ported two numbers, involving all the three big providers, and all were a total shambles.

Also, if you try the pre-paid and the coverage is no good for where you use it most, you can still move to another network.
Good advice, thank you

I don't think Lebara is a very good prepaid offer now. Domestic calls are very expensive. They used to be great for calling abroad but they revised their prices last year.

Of course it depends on the intended usage.

Re: Getting a mobile phone before residence permit?

Hi all,

I also just arrived at Zurich, and I am facing the same issue. Now, there is a *fantastic* deal on Wingo, but it last only few days -- and I am waiting for my ID still. Is it possible to ask my girlfriend to hire it for me (she has already an ID). Or we are going to get into a legal issue here?

Re: Getting a mobile phone before residence permit?

I'm using a pre-paid Lycamobile since the time of my arrival: ordered it even before the arrival to my assumed address and registered it just with a passport and a registration confirmation (it's provided immediately) in a nearby Kkiosk. I'm buying M-bundles on a monthly basis (used to be 19 CHF, starting this month 24 CHF).
Sometimes I leave abroad for a few weeks using my second SIM card and if it's exactly when my current bundle expires I just don't prolong it Not a big win, but something.
There're cheaper contract-based providers though, I haven't tried them.

Re: Getting a mobile phone before residence permit?

They say to call them, order by phone, why don't you ask them?
