D-link wireless router with Swisscom internet???

I just spoke to Swisscom to register for their internet services and they tell me that I will not able to use my D-link router for wireless and that I need to buy a different router from them.

Is anyone using D-link router with a Swisscom internet connection?

Re: D-link wireless router with Swisscom internet???

The brand is not important, the technology is. Your router is probably an ADSL one as they are used everywhere around the globe. Swisscom uses the next generation, "VDSL". So you will need a VDSL router and I am sure D-Link makes them as well...

Hi Angela

The OP is referring to a Swisscom internet connection ( BTW, you can use a router with a Cablecom connection - good to have it discussed on another thread ).

Re: D-link wireless router with Swisscom internet???

Well it worked, I installed my D-Link router with my Swisscom internet connection
I just followed the d-link guidelines and it worked.

So please don't always believe what the internet provider tells you - they just wanted me to purchase their own router

Re: D-link wireless router with Swisscom internet???

Sorry to spoil the party here but there might be more to this. I recall in the UK some years back that if you a phone you needed to buy one from BT, the reason given they own the network your going to plug it into, and they didn't want unapproved kit plugged in.

Now dont know if this is the case with Swisscom, but it may well be. They may insistyou use their kit on the basis that they own the network; and if your device starts broadcasting nasty packets on it; well they may, just may simply cut your line....

What they told you didn't really make sense. Glad to hear you got it working.

Didn't Swisscom send you a Motorola VDSL modem (Ethernet) with your connection? I got a Motorola VDSL wireless modem with my connection albeit I also got Bluewin.

In any case you just plug your D-link router into the back of the Swisscom modem and the D-link device acts solely as a wireless router. I do not think that a D-link ADSL modem will work on the Swisscom network, unless you can tell us otherwise. I think Swisscome were just trying to sell you one of their 'wirelss solutions'.

These are mainly free to use with the internet package, and if something goes wrong, they can connect to you, send a replacement in the post or send a technician to your door for free help.

it's not the case. And hasn't been for years. Any telecoms equipment sold in mainstream shops is approved for connection to the Swisscom network. It's a European-wide thing. I suppose there's an outside chance that this particular model was made for the Outer Mongolian market and therefore not approved for use in Europe. But otherwise there's nothing to worry about,

Re: D-link wireless router with Swisscom internet???

How do you find your username and password for your broadband connection signal if you have a Swisscom router. I cannot see it in the router set up menu. Any ideas. I would like to use a NON Swisscom router.

Assuming you have a VDSL router you can use, it shouldn't be much of a problem. You'll need to set up the connection the first time using the self-guided installation script and the Motorola model provided by Swisscom. You'll get your login credentials there, you can then copy them over to your new router.

198.162.1.1 to talk to your router. If you are asked after keying that in, admin is the original username, with 1234 as the password, it usually does the trick.
If you changed your user name and password ( as one should ) after the original installation, go to the swisscom homepage - Kundencenter (customer center) and log in to get the info you need.
Or failing that, there should be an 0800 number, call them and get your relevant details.
I wouldn't tell them why though

It is working fine and has been for four years, I just wanted to change the router but I cannot find the log in details anywhere either on paper or inside the router set up.

Re: D-link wireless router with Swisscom internet???

You could also try here

https://sam.sso.bluewin.ch/my/data/DoLogin

as I dont think the direct modem IP address will allow you to acess the modem's password and login account details, even if you go through the modem it ends up taking you back to that page anyway... via expert mode > configure > router password > http://r.bluewin.ch/?id=85791 or something like that

Anyway probably best to call Swisscom directly if you havent already - they generally are quite helpful. Good luck.

Any vdsl/modem router will work. You just have to make sure it is technology compliant.
