I merely meant that while Sense (almost) completely covers Windows Mobile, on Android it's just a bit of additional functionality that can easily be added yourself. The design of the widgets etc. looks great, though.

| | Re: New phone coming out... the Motorola Droid Google Nav now "fixed" for the EU Milestone!
Read all abaaat it http://androidforums.com/202704-post10.html
Been out for a short time but i've never seen instructions and a link before so thought I would share.
Tested it this morning... works perfectly on an unrooted device. |

What was broken? I found google navigation on my milestone by adding a shortcut to 'Directions' on the home screen, it seemes to work ok tho I never really used it seriously, what I wanted was MotoNav to have US maps.
Still disappointed in this, can't tether properly (GotoMyPC and LogMeIn don't work through a PDANet tethered Milestone) cut and paste drives me mad, can't save email attachments nor forward them, cant edit the original text in a reply to an email blah blah blah, if theres a windows mobile machine thats even half as fast I'll replace it.

Just downloaded NESOID and SNESOID, along with about 800 games for each (which are naturally backup copies of the existing games I own)... everything i've tried so far woks like a dream.
Seriously though, whoever at Motorola decides to put the dpad on the right, as well as making it such a stupid shape (elongated, not square) needs to be shot, or demoted to cleaning toilets.

I think I just hit the last straw with android. On a trip to the UK I swapped in my UK sim (no internet access on that one) I tried to acess the calendar and it wouldn't do it unless I signed in to google, so I was stuck without access to the calendar, what I had to do was put in the swisscom sim and enable data access while roaming just to view the calendar, heck knows how much swisscom will charge for that.
Back to windows mobile for me, it's slow and clunky but it does what I want it to do.

Syncs perfectly well with active sync / Exchange.

Has there been any news on the upcoming Motorola Android slate (i.e. non keyboard smartphone). I'm slowly starting to warm to the Nexus One but because I'm not due an upgrade until June, I can wait for something better.
Anyway, I'm glad the iPhone finally has a worthy competitor, I don't think I could face a 4th iPhone in a row |

I am forced to use google sync because i dont have an exchange server to use. On windows mobile I just have it syncing with outlook, I used a third party app to get an initial sync with the milstone from outlook but it was a bit buggy.

The problem you were having, btw. is caused by a security feature Google deliberately put in for business users - if your phone gets stolen and someone puts a different SIM-card in, the data connected to the Google account becomes inaccessible until you enter the account password. Since the password isn't cached locally (also for security reasons), an internet connection is required to authenticate.
I personally prefer it that way. I guess it wouldn't be an issue in the States, where you get country-wide data included in all GSM plans but apparently Google didn't think far enough to realize that data roaming in Europa is almost impossible due to the massive costs.
I just know one thing for sure: I'll never go back to Windows Mobile 6.x - desktop syncing is the only thing that's better about it - apart from that, it sucks massively.

If it is a security feature then they've implemented it inconsistently.
I was really looking forward to getting rid of windows mobile I think after x years in the market it's a disgrace that it's so unresponsive but I'm gaining a new found grudging respect for it. For interest, heres a thread I commented on, with some android v windows mobile functionality thoughts http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428459 I think android is deficient in much more than just the desktop synching.

one question tho.
In the photos in the first post theres a clear gap between the top row of keys on the keyboard and the edge of the sliding section, has anyone else got that? on mine the sliders stops right on the edge of the top row of keys.

After this I isntalled the Android 2.1 launcher and all the other 2.1 goodies (as well as my other main apps) and it is smooth as a babies bum... the launcher, homescreens etc are all silky smooth and it really is a different phone.
The browser is still a bit juddery sometimes, but i'm certainly not noticing anything worse than before.
My Milestone is now rocking my world. |

Any chance the other milestone owners could pay careful attention to scrolling speeds in the browser say on news.bbc.co.uk before they upgrade to 2.0.1? This feels slow to me but might just be paranoia. However what isn't paranoia is the speed of typing into this entry field as I reply, its lagging about three words behind my typing.

Oh that launcher is nice, thats very very nice, I'd just say that don't be too quick to hit 'set as default' to let you flick between the old and the new desktops to get the setup similar, also I got several widgets that failed to load on the new launcher initially, I just deleted them and created anew and they were fine.

Ooooooohhh... Swype has just been leaked, read all abaaatttt it http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/12/...pe-on-android/
It's an alternative keyboard with a lot of buzz surrounding it and a very interesting input method. Just installed and done the tutorial and i'm quite impressed, though it's going to take a bit of learning to adjust. |

Mr Richdog.
I am due for a new phone in the coming weeks and have been following the Milestone since early Nov 09'.
it is on top of my list, may i ask you to answer the following?
1)Best place to buy unbranded?
2)Out of the box what upgrades are a MUST?
3)Is there another phone you would point me toward other than Milestone?
NOTE: i am not techno savy. nore am i often around the pc/web/net to be upgrading, adding on or in general faffing (if there is such a word) with my phone. looking for an out of the box wifi, gps (voice guided) phone.
thanks in advance
