Re: cablecom [change IP address?]

you need to turn off the cable modem for longer than the lease time (which appears to be 90 minutes) AND also most likely be lucky enough that someone else turns on their cable modem in your area.

I'd say 12 hours should do it. 90 minutes will most likely not do it. Renew/release will not do it.

there's a pretty good chance you will get the same IP that way. In fact, I am pretty sure there ISN'T a way to consistently get a new IP every day - other than you set up your own C level domain.

To the OP ... do you have a good reason to want a new IP every day?
I am sure there are easier/better ways to do whatever you are trying to do...

Hardly ever from my own experience even if I were to power cycle the cable modem. But see this:

cablecom [change IP address?]

well, if he turns it off at night and on again in the morning, then he manages to do that and save electricity could put the modem on a timer switch.

EDIT: yes, I am aware that i'm responding to a 3 year old thread

Re: How often does the IP change with cablecom?

As I remember from working there, Cablecom uses fixed IP addresses, not dynamic. This means that you should have the same IP address every time you boot up your computer.

Re: cablecom [change IP address?]

sorry, but your public IP address will always be the same.

your local IP address might or might not change depending on whether Cablecom uses static or dynamic Ip addresses - I believe it uses static

This is because Internet Service Providers use NAT - network address translation, meaning that every Cablecom customer has the same public IP address, then the NAT server moves the packets to the right customer because you have a local IP address that Cablecom knows about, but no one outside the Cablecom network. This is the way all ISP's work, by the way.

In order to change your IP address, or seem to to outside observers, use an anonymous proxy like anonymouse.org to mask your real IP. the other servers will see the anonymouse.org IP address, not yours.

Or, you can find a software which does this for you, like "Hide my IP"

(In order to thank me, I would appreciate some reputation boost. Thanks)

This will not do it. Your public IP will always be Cablecom's or Swisscom's, or whatever ISP you are using.

Please read my answer above for more explanation.

Re: How often does the IP change with cablecom?

Nope, they will only see the public Cablecom IP address.

I explained this elsewhere but there is something called Network Address Translation - the only address shown for all Cablecom customers is the public Cablecom IP address.

Then, Cablecom does a NAT on the packets and sends it to the local IP address which is held by you. Only within the Cablecom network is this address visible.

This is because there are so few IP addresses available with the old IP address system.

I was speaking about the public IP. The internal one on my intranet (192.168.x.x) is allocated from my router and I can change it if I set it manually, but doesn't play any role when I am in Internet.

That's right.

Your public IP is an internet address allocated to Cablecom , or Swisscom if you are a Swisscom customer. It cannot change.

In order for another computer to see another other than the Cablecom, use an anonymous proxy like www.anonymouse.org

there is a field where you can post the URL of the website you want to visit, and hit enter. only the anonymouse server will know you're from Cablecom. the website you are visiting will see the anonymouse IP address - some sites, like blogs, block anonymous proxies (there is a long list of them available on the internet)

Or use a software like "mask my IP" which will find these anonymous proxies for you

try this by going to http://www.whatismyip.org/

to find out your original IP and by going through www.anonymouse.org
