VLC player is a great little program thats also available for Windows. I use it for playing almost all video files, as is is a much more robust player (in terms of Codecs) than Media Player, and isn't riddled with Copyright protection. But it will not work with all DVD players in PC's. PC players are often backed up with specific software (ie. the hardware drivers) that will not allow this sort of thing.

There are programs available which can run the DVD as an image, saving all the details, and running it in a Virtual DVD Drive (ie, software) so you can then remove the DVD. This can circumvent some of the saftware bars, as it is no longer running directly fro the DVD Drive...
It is also avalable for Mac and works fine.

Have a code-fee DVD player too, but so far it has played all movies/zones.

Was it advertised as code-free, or (as was in my case) would you have had to pay an additional fee? Do any of the other DVDs from other regions work on the player?
It was advertised as "code free," and we were told that it would play American DVDs. It will play BBC DVDs, and some other American ones. The Simpsons and Boston Legal DVDs are both produced by Fox.

Well, there is an article here that could explain it - http://hometheater.about.com/cs/dvdl...gioncodesa.htm (Pal vs. NTSC)

It also mentions the RCE (mainly by Fox and Paramount) that can apparently block these DVDs to be plaid on any code-free player..

May be bad luck, unless one of the more savvy members can help you out if you ask nicely..

I have an iMac (2008 model) that was bought in the US and the region is coded to the US, yet I've been able to use VLC to play DVDs with any region coding. So that should work?

It was said that by someone that RCE might be the reason... but not quiet. your "code free"player is set to code/ region "0" these new discs by Fox, look for "1" or "2" if "0" you get an error. I don't know what player you have, but if there is a remote hack or menu hack, then you can either type a code into your remote to change regions or do it through your settings menu to change regions.

if you tell me what player you have, i will let you know.

by the way... here are the region settings for DVD.

0 Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1–6 flags set.

1 United States, Canada, Bermuda, U.S. territories

2 Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Greenland

3 Southeast Asia, South Korea, Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Macau

4 Mexico, Central America, South America, Oceania

5 India, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa (except Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho), Central and South Asia, Mongolia, North Korea

6 People's Republic of China

7 Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia)

8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.

ALL Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player.

Checked Inter Discount, they only have zone 2 players. Does it mean hacking is the only option?
