Mobile Internet (WWAN) - providers, pros, cons

I've recently cancelled my Swisscom Mobile Unlimited account as they are terminating my student rate and I have to pay the same as everyone else.

So naturally, I've turned my attention to the three main providers and I have the following information:

Swisscom
Pros:
  • The only 7.2Mbps HSPA network provider
  • Throttle speed after 10Gb traffic
  • *Probably* better coverage in remote areas
Cons:
  • More expensive than the competition
  • They seem to charge high amounts for the "free" devices and steer the default package away from Data Flat
Sunrise
Pros:
  • Cheaper than Swisscom
  • Throttle speed after 10Gb traffic
  • In theory will benefit from Orange/Sunrise merger
  • Have some reasonable bundles of equipment and subscription
Cons:
  • Only 3.6Mbps HSPA network
Orange
Pros:
  • Cheaper than Swisscom (especially with 240+50 offer at the moment)
  • In theory will benefit from Orange/Sunrise merger
Cons:
  • Throttle speed after 5Gb traffic
My desire is to get good value and not be throttled; this is putting me off Orange as, even through I've not exceeding 5Gb in the last 2 years, I assume I will in the next two. They also (according to the front office chap I spoke to earlier) have no plans to upgrade to a 7.2Mbps network.

Sunrise, even through they seem better, fall into the same pot as Orange due to the merger. 3.6Mbps network, reasonable price, maybe better conditions.

Swisscom....now I will use the connectivity more than 10 days a month and thus need the most expensive subscription. I don't feel like giving Swisscom 170 francs per month (if they made casa trio into casa quattro for, say, 120 then I might be interested).

Am I missing any other options (other than abuse the SIM card I have in my work laptop)?

I've not linked to any subscriptions as prices and links will change.

I have a sunrise plug-in that I'm happy with.I pay 59 a month I think. Perhaps you should also explore the ADSL route, or a bundle that involves a mobile phone?

Re: Mobile Internet (WWAN) - providers, pros, cons

I was going to cancel my Swisscom Mobile Unlimited package and go for a Sunrise or Orange data stick. After reviewing this extensively, I ended up sticking with Swisscom. Why?

- The Sunrise network SUCKS. The 3G coverage is about 1/5 of that of Swisscom - just check out the network coverage maps
- Orange doesn't have EDGE. Outside their (minimalistic) 3G network, the data stick becomes unusable.
- With Swisscom, you can use WiFi networks all over the place - it's included in your data flat package. The other providers don't offer WiFi.

Waiting for the merger to happen doesn't make too much sense. 1st of all it'll take until May until the anti-trust agency will decide whether they can merge at all. And if they can, it'll be another year or so until the networks are interconnected. By then, my contract will have run out and I can re-evaluated.

And last but not least: the price difference between Swisscom's top-notch network and the ridiculously bad coverage of Sunrise and Orange is a mere 10 Fr. per month. Not worth the trouble, if you ask me. I'm paying 59 Fr. now for the data flat + free WiFi all over the country, including on trains etc.
