Display on Nokia broke after 2 months, now what?

Hi,

I'm sorry for bothering you all, I'm mainly wanting to vent, but hope that in doing so someone can offer some advice.

Two months ago my wife bought a new Nokia 6700 Classic phone, and already the screen has broken. When buying the phone we asked what was covered in the guarantee, explicitly asking about the display as we've had problems in the past. The guy in the shop assured us that any issues would be covered for two years. My German isn't the best, so I did labour this point quite a bit to make sure it really was any problems with the display.

Roll on two months and when I take the broken phone back to the shop the guy says defects are covered, but you have abused the phone which is why it's broken and that isn't covered. My wife insists it was not mistreated in any way, so what can I do?

The card was bought with a UBS mastercard, can I try asking them to do something?

Or as I also have the same phone do I just suck it up and say that I have bought a spare charger for 400,-?

Any advice is much appreciated.

What the sales assistant is trying to do is get you to go away. I've heard the "you've abused it" argument far too often, so I'm fairly sure it's part of their standard training.

When you bought the phone, part of the contract was that any issues would be covered for two years. They're now trying to renege on this. You must push. Demand to speak to the manager. Take a pushy German speaker with you. If the manager doesn't give satisfaction, then start writing to head office - you might want to copy the phone manufacturer, and your credit card issuer.

Always remain calm and polite. State precisely what you want, and why you expect it. And don't be fobbed off.

You might also see if you're covered under any of your household or other insurance policies.

All the above based on your wife not abusing the phone, of course!

Display screens cracking are almost never covered in guranatees. At least I have never before heard of this item being covered by anyone whether it be a cell phone, iphone, mp3 player or any other digital item.

If all else fails, for 17 USD (free shipping), you can buy the screen on ebay: http://goo.gl/o3Jr
Youtube has videos with instructions on how to do it: http://goo.gl/uVKt

How has the display broken? Is it really cracked, or just not lighting up etc. If it's cracked that sounds like accidental damage, which is not covered by guarantee, normally. If there's a design flaw that makes the screens easy to crack then that's something to take up with Nokia.

Yes the screen is cracked. It happened twice on her previous Nokia 6500. We were in the shop asking if they could fix that and he that as it was not bought there we'd need to pay for postage to their repair center before even giving us a quote on how much it would cost to repair. As that was so much trouble we decided to just buy a new phone instead.

As we were buying the new phone there and then I asked a number of times would everything be covered with the new phone, including the display and including problems like we had on he current one.

Thanks for the all the feed back.

Thanks so much for the links. With free shipping I'll be purchasing one of these and giving it a go, don't feel as if there is anything to loose now.

Once = unique occurance
Twice = coincidence
Three times = trend

Your wife had 3 x phones and each time the screen cracked....

Actually it appears to be a design fault with the Nokia 6500 classic that causes the cracks. A google search for Nokia 6500 crack lists pages of people who have also had the display crack with no apparent cause. One example would be:

Quote:
we came across the issue whereby some Nokia 6500 screens appeared to crack spontaneously
Having always had Nokia phones it just feels easier to move to another Nokia for the familiarity with the menus. This time we pushed pretty hard on the display of the 6700 in the shop trying to break it before buying and it appeared to cope with some pushing about. Guess it can't really.

print those things from the internet off and return to the store.

alternately, contact the nokia distributor in Switzerland, it's a place near Dübendorf IIRC.
