What is your recommendation for a mobile phone in basel??

Could you please help me with some advices regarding a mobile phone my doubts are:

1) Could I have it without the card of my registration? (I only have at this moment the letter they gave me after the registration)

2) Which is Better a Blackberry so I could use the BB messenger to have contact with my girlfriend who is still in Mexico? or it is better an iPhone so I could use skype?

3) Which is the best company for international (Mexico) calls?

I really appreciatte your advises

Best Regards,

Daniel

Re: What is your recommendation for a mobile phone in basel??

Hello,

Can't comment on the mobile phone contract as i still use my UK one for texting, and have a work one (which one ever calls).

But as for Skype, as long as you can connect via a internet link, then the calls are free (voice to voice), and the other person must have Skype as well. I tend to do this from a laptop.

I don't have a iphone, so I cannot comment on how good it would be

I would not use Skype as a actual telephone method. I would get a VOIP with a package that has low cost calls to US&A adn Mexico....

Just my experience, others may disagree/have a different view

In Basel, make sure your phone will not automatically roam to the French or German networks, otherwise you'll find what you thought were local or national calls become international calls... with higher rates...

Hi,

do NOT use your iphone for skype. The call may be free, but the data going over the network will work out very expensive on the mobile phone networks.

The chepates international rates will not be normally found on the standard telcos - I know this intimately well. In the past I found helvatel the cheapest:

http://www.helvatel.ch/

One thing to watch out for on all these services, is the base for charging, e.g. per minute, per hour, and how much they chage you for even making a connection. Mexico is relatively well connected so you should find some relatively good rates.

With regard to a mobile phone itself, you should have no trouble picking up a prepaid phone, which you can then later cobcert to a post-paid should you really want to.

Re: What is your recommendation for a mobile phone in basel??

For international calls of course Skype is good but not always convenient. What I did is bought an Iphone (but any phien will do) from Orange and have the Maxima Plan (~100 CHF a month) with unlimited calls for local phones and orange mobiles. The thing is I buy my phone cards (called Sonic) at my favourite store (guy by kannenfeldplatz) the phone card gives me about 400-1000 minutes depending on how many phone calls I make and if I call mobile or land line (in Peru). I pay 10 CHF for 15 CHF credit. It is handy as I usually have by the end of the month more than 8 hours of phone use.

Good luck!

to be fair that only happens at the edge of Kleinhünigen and Riehen and you notice it on your display.
