Longtime lurker here, first time poster - I know I need to go introduce myself through the proper channels.

I moved to Basel today (!) and I've spent some time trying to figure out the wi-fi situation (right now I'm using an unlocked network nearby but this is obviously not a permanent solution). I'm here temporarily (3 months) so I can not have internet installed in the apartment I'm renting. My landlord told me that other people in the building install a USB "thing" that "picks up" the internet, from Swisscom. Of course I went there and walked out with the wrong "thing." Does anyone have any experience with the Swisscom "Unlimited USB modem"? I think this might be the all-important "thing." http://www.swisscom.ch/res/internet/...odem/index.htm

It looks like there are only a few Swisscom hotspots in downtown Basel, so I'm especially wondering if people have had positive experiences with this device and how far the hotspot signal carries (my apartment is a few blocks away from the nearest hotspot).

I would have though the Swisscom thingy would be a dongle that allows you to surf via the mobile phone network.

In which case Vodafone will probably be cheaper.
