Skype - is it any good?

Hi everyone,

We're looking into setting up Skype for us and our families in the UK to make sure they don't worry about the cost of calling us while we're in CH.

The Skype website makes it seem really easy/straightforward, almost too good to be true!

I just wanted to know what your experiences of Skype are; would you recommend it? have you found a better alternative? any potential problems?

I've had a little look through the history, but can't see quite what I want to know, could just be me being dense (as usual). One post I read suggested that it isn't always free. We'd only use it calling PC to PC so from my understanding it would be still be free.

Thanks for your time and help on this

Kate

pc to pc is fine, my wife uses this for Slovakia all the time & I use for business in US & Australia from home, never any issue.
very straightforward to set up & works over home wireless connection a treat.

oh & yes, is free ...

Re: Skype - is it any good?

hello,,

if you are using it for pc to pc calls, then it definately is free.

I use it almost all the time and its great. I also have used MSN messenger and yahoo messenger for calls PC to PC but these can sometimes echo or have 'lag' when u are talking.

I have not had any problems with skype at all so would recommend it and its also real easy to use. You will find there are many other programs to chat over the internet but i would say that skype is the most widely used.

hope it works for ya ,
cheers.

Re: Skype - is it any good?

Sometimes it jumps a little - it picks up a 1 or 2 second snippet and just repeats it in a loop for a few seconds - then drops back into the conversation.

Also, the "signal" seems to improve with a better internet connection - not really my field of expertise but it depends how much upload / download bandwidth you have available or some such.

As I understand it, it's free if you're calling PC to PC. You can pay to have a "number" allocated to your Skype account, and then people can call you from a landline to that number, and you answer them on Skype. Also, you can call out on Skype to a landline, which you pay per minute the same as a phone call. And you can also buy handsets that work as a dual Skype / landline "phone" so that you can make Skype calls with a handset (it's free to call another Skype account, but they charge you for a Skype-landline, or landline-landline, and it seems to charge you for landline-Skype as well)

We also use Vonage which is a Voice-over-internet telephone thing, Skype seems to be more universal, Vonage has some better features (for example, a voicemail service which emails you your voicemails as a wav file - handy!) but the quality of the calls seems better with Skype. I think you have to pay for Vonage, though.

For calls with family in the UK, I think Skype is all you'd need.

Re: Skype - is it any good?

Well its free so its worth trying it out

I use it to keep in touch with my family in the UK, I use the messaging function and I also use it to dial UK numbers and pay a cheaper rate (SkypeOut - about £15 for 12 months subscription)

People with skype can call you free via skype but I often find the quality is low on this so I always use the SkypeOut service instead.

I aslo have a skype number (Skypeln - about £20 for 12 months subscription) which is a UK number so anyone in the UK can call me on that number and it only costs them a UK call rate, unfortunately this doens't always work and we often get a really crap line that cuts off and has a lot of delay.

We have a phone which is a dual skype and landline phone so when someone calls via skype it rings through to our normal phone.

Its not the greatest but its cheap and cheerful and the software is free so there's no harm in trying it out and you can also use webcams with skype on both Mac and PC's

Hope this helps
Nicky

Its free whether i call another Mac user or a PC user

I only pay when i use the SkypeOut service and dial a landline as this is better quality

I think when they say PC to PC they mean 'internet connected device or machine to another'

Skype is great, been using it for years. It is clean and simple to use, does not come with complimentary add/spyware. The Skypeout features are advanced, but easy to use.

Skype definitely gets the thumbs up from me.

ah OK thanks for clearing that up

Us Mac users don't like our beloved Macs to be called PC's even though they may as well be these days

Don't worry, they don't discriminate against you Mac users (however tempting it might be....)

PC = computers in general in this case and includes such sub-species as Mac users.

Yeah sorry, I was meaning it to cover both

Out of interest what dual phone do you have? We have the "Dualphone 8330" I think, it works fine 90% of the time but every now and then it goes a bit mental and needs resetting. Also they seem to update the firmware for it without checking for bugs so I'm always wary of updating it without a google search first to make sure they've ironed out the problems!!

Not sure what it is, its not branded just called DualPhone made by RTX i think?? Model number RTX 3088.3

Its OK, sometimes if I am laking a skypeout call it cuts off for no reason after about 20 mins or so but the sound quality is perfect and if someone calls me on my skypeln number it can be a bad connection

I don't even bother with skype to skype calls anymore as these days its always bad quality.

Edit:- This is the one we have Terry - http://dualphone.net/DUALphone_3088_for_Skype-789.aspx

Re: Skype - is it any good?

i use it a lot and its great.

what people tend to forget after awhile is just how amazing the sound quality is (assuming you have a fast enough connection which most people do these days). its really like the person is in the same room with you.

Unless, unfortunately, you have a mac. :-) They haven't got something quite right yet (having used it on my powerbook last year and my macbook this year) so if you're doing Mac to Mac video, I highly recommend iChat AV. Incredibly high quality that way.

I use it for Mac to PC often and it seems OK, obviously not as good as Mac to Mac with iChat but I am just relieved that I can now chat to family with PC's on webcam. Before it was a struggle using Mac - iChat to PC - AIM - quality was rubbish.
