Landline Call divert from UK

For the last 15 years I have used this UK BT service to have all my incoming UK callers diverted free of charge to the caller to my Swisscom number. I have never had a problem until March this year, when the setting up procedure at home failed to work.

I reported the 'fault' when I returned home and at first BT said the matter would be resolved at the local exchange. But after waiting a few days with no obvious action I got a message, later confirmed in writing, to say:

From 03 Feb 2010 customers can only divert calls to certain countries, as listed. Switzerland is not on the list. The bar was put on the BT network due to an issue identified with fraudulent use of the BT network overseas!

Has anyone seen mention of this in the Swiss press or via Swisscom? What sort of fraudulent use could it possibly be?

Ideas welcome.

Re: Landline Call divert from UK

I am afraid that I cannot comment on the Swisscom situation, but we got round that problem by setting up a UK landline (London in our case) telephone number via Skype and all calls to that number get automatically transferred to our mobiles.

I can't really comment other than I'm not surprised based on all the issues Switzerland is having with banking, privacy, etc.

Re: Landline Call divert from UK

I still have my London office number diverted to my Swiss office number and it is still working. Although I do pay call charges for calls diverted I think.

Re: Landline Call divert from UK

Interested to know more details of the Skype solution ... i.e. how much it costs.

I've got a UK "personal" number (flextel.co.uk 07010) which I divert to my Swiss mobile. Intiially it didn't work as Switzerland was barred as a destination - this despite the fact I had no issue when diverting it to my local mobile in Beijing. It was to do with the high termination charges that Swiss mobile companies charged.

Anyway, they did some investigation, decided that the termination charges were OK (or at least were less than the profit they make on calls to that number) and unbarred them.

The personal number isn't cheap to call - it's like calling an expensive mobile, I think. So it works fine for business calls but not personal ones. I currently tell my family to call a UK number which gives 1p/min calls to Swiss landlines, and then divert my Swiss office landline to my mobile. Messy, but works well.

However, havng a UK number forwarded to my mobile for close to free would be great; hence my Skype question.

Are you with BT in London? I too pay for the call divert service and I have a one-off 4 a month payment to cover all landline calls to Switzerland from my UK BT number. A very good deal when it works!!

It's very intriguing that your divert remains intact!

Re: Landline Call divert from UK

According to their website BT charges around 2.60 a month PLUS the diverted call charge (i.e. at expensive BT rates for calling Swiss mobiles).

http://www.productsandservices.bt.co...allingfeatures

The Skype thing ... seems to diver to Skype itself only (ie you need an internet phone). Do you actually have it diverted to ring your normal Swiss mobiles, Nicolaschulz?

Yes, people ring what looks like a normal London number (ie 0207 ....), which is actually a Skype online number, for which you just need the internet, and from which calls are diverted directly to our Swiss mobiles.

and of course the fine bureaucrats have never heard of VoIP or Skype, which makes nonsense of any such controls.

I have a Swiss number, a London number, and a US number all ringing the same line at home... thats going to get some old sod verrry verry confused.

there is no solution that will call your swiss mobile for close to free. the swiss carriers charge to connect incoming calls to their network (irrespective of the point of origin of the call), and that charge is about chf 0.20 or so. thats the absolute minimum you will have to pay.. and more likely 0.25 to 0.35.

diverting to swiss land lines however can be easily arranged for close to zero cost

Go onto Skype.
You create a Skype user name and account (totally free) tell them location is UK.
You go for free calls in Europe from UK (something like 4.75 per month)
You can buy a UK London number for 35 per year on your UK Skype account.
You attach the London number to your Skype account.
You then do call forwarding (set at say 5 seconds) to a land line in Switzerland.

I believe that all the calls diverted from your UK land line to your swiss landline (unlimited number) would then be free.
Your total cost per annum is basically 35 + (4.75 x 12)

You can then log on your computer in Switzerland with your Skype account (skype I believe will think you are in the UK) and you will be able to make calls from your skype account to all landline calls to UK and Europe free.

I am not certain, but that is what I have worked out.

Re: Landline Call divert from UK

that will work, of course, but ...

a) it costs about 100 bucks a year more than it should, and

b) requires you to run your PC all day, just to have Skype on

here's how to do it for close to free.

a) set up an account with sipgate.co.uk. you get a free UK number... pick one in the same area code as your home phone, if possible. fund the account with say 10 bucks.

b) divert home phone in UK to ring the sipgate number. this should be free or maybe a penny a min.

c) set sipgate to forward all calls to swiss fixed line. it will cost you maybe 2-3p a min.

done. no PC. no monthly charges. just a small per min charge.

Wrong:

PC does not need to be on because the Server at Skype knows you are not on line and automatically forwards the call.

I did look at SipGate but wasn't sure if they would survive at the time but there were many alternatives with them and I think you could run a few numbers on one PC.

Re: Landline Call divert from UK

Thanks everyone!

For the time being I'll simply give my Swiss office number to people and http://www.justcall.co.uk/country.as...ry=Switzerland. 1p/min that they have to pay.

And I'll divert my office number to my mobile before I go home, which the company then pays.

Distribution of wealth and all that.
