Planning to buy desktop replacement laptop

Hi All,

I thought of buying a laptop in Manor which will be helpful for me in doing freelancing job. I am not so confident in getting HP laptop for this purpose. Does anyone has suggestion or experience please share with me? Sorry to post such a silly questions.

Regards,
Senthil

Re: Planning to buy desktop replacement laptop

I have tried many different laptops over the years, and the make that has brought least hassle is Acer. HP and IBM have been ok. Avoid Toshiba.

You'll probably find that you'll save money on whatever model you choose, if you look at Toppreise.ch first. Manor is not the best place to buy computer equipment.

Re: Planning to buy desktop replacement laptop

Hp business machines are more robust than HP consumer machines. I have an HP elite book, although I don't know if you can get it here... so far so good.

IBM/Lenovo are quite good - I've had several when I worked in the US, and they were reliable. However, mine went back and forth from office to home daily and it traveled a lot and I had to replace them after about 18 months.

My last Toshiba did not fare very well...although it did fall several times and my husband tripped over it and broke the power cord.

Definitley look at toppreise. Also, if you're tough on them, and use them a lot, count on your laptop lasting about 2 years, maybe 3, and make sure you back it up frequently. If your laptop just sits on a desk, it will probably last longer.

Re: Planning to buy desktop replacement laptop

I'm an IBM, now Lenovo, guy. I like them principally because they have the mouse button in the middle of the keyboard, and I don't need to take my hand away from the keyboard to operate the mouse.

A few years back, I spilled water in my IBM T41, and it didn't immediately act up, but a month later it shorted out. I honestly don't believe it had anything to do with the water. However, I shipped it off to IBM warranty replacement, and they opened it up, saw the water damage, and voided the warranty. As it was, I was already very near the end of the warranty period. For 600, they fixed the laptop. Replaced the system board, and when I talked to the tech, he said that even though they weren't sure they would need to replace the DVD drive, they did since it was a flat rate $600 charge.

Today, I use an X61s - it's about a year old. I highly reccomend the T and X series -- they are enterprise versions, and not consumer versions. While you will pay more for an enterprise version of an HP, Dell, Lenovo, or Toshiba, they are, IMO, a better value if you can afford.

Good luck.

Re: Planning to buy desktop replacement laptop

I went right off Toshiba when my DVD drive died, and a search revealed that it was a known issue - something like 1 in 3 DVD drives needed replacing within the first year. Ok, so it's under warranty, which is all very well, but it means doing without the laptop for a week.

18 months later, the screen died.

1 year after that - being used as a desktop with monitor and keyboard and mouse attached, it just gave up working completely.
