How to set up landline/internet

hi,
i am very bad at this kinda thing, just did a search and couldn't find specific advice so any suggestions would be appreciated.
Moving into an apartment in July and I wanted to make sure I get the landline and internet sorted so we won't be stuck for months without a connection. What do i need to do to set one up, which companies are there and where can i buy the boxes to connect the phone to the internet....I need a step by step guide for dummies!
I live in Lausanne by the way.

track immediately the previous tenant phone number (harass your agency, etc...).
With it its ok, without, you will need to get crooked by an electrician, or do it yourself (which is extremely easy: putting 2 cables already there under 2 screws).
Anyway it takes long time so you should register 20-25 days in advance to get everything "on time".
