Cablecom & HDTV

When I will get my own apartment (IF I will get it) I intend to buy HDTV Television & Cable receiver. Obviously, apart from the HDMI connection I will get no benefits from Cablecom, since the video stream does not reach the HD resolution.

Is there any plan for the near future for Cablecom to bring HDTV or am I throwing my money out of the window?

HD or no HD you're throwing your money out the window. There is a wealth of information in this area on free to air satellite and dreambox cable receivers (think free cablecom plus trimmings)

Hi Fabio,

I think Gooner is referring to this thread by Mark about satellite tv which is just a one time fee Dummies Guide: Satellite install for free to air channels. No monthly fees - cheap

Re: Cablecom & HDTV

If and when cablecom offer HD (which is supposed to be soon), there is a very good chance that it will not be in English. I suspect their existing English offering will stay at standard resolution.

Of course, I'd love to be wrong about that. Since I can't actually get any free to air satellite stuff from astra in HD, I might even consider cablecom if they could give me English HD content.

Re: Cablecom & HDTV

I all agree with you about Sat FTA, but the chances that my future landlord will not allow me to install a satellite dish in the balcon, or the chances that the balcon will not be facing the south might be considerable. I'd be the first eager to install my own Sat system (I love these kind of things, and the satisfaction you get doing everything by yourself) but I reckon that Cablecom is simply hassle free and gives no doubts whether it can be done or not. At least living not too far from Zurich, everybody has it.

About the Dreambox, a friend of mine has it and he confirmed the thing of receiving all the channels for free. Being this legal or not, is it doable just with certain models of Dreambox or even with the cheapest one? (I guess I refer to the DM500).

Is there a BIG difference between HDMI output and Scart RGB? I guess there is...

To find a compromise, I've heard Component output is pretty good too, but the cheap Dreambox lacks of that connection.

Hi Fabio,

Your dreambox questions are off-topic for this thread - you'd be best to find another thread for that - or even better - visit a forum dedicated to those issues.

More confirmation from their FAQ to confirm sometime in this year HDTV with new STB which is yet unpriced.

Ja.

And that selection will be very small. We have HD TV already in our cable network (InterGGA) - but we only get Annixe HD, BBC HD (which is only a test channel, nothing to get excited about), Sat 1 HD and Pro 7 HD (both of which are in German only). All in all, the whole offering is completely superfluous at the moment and there aren't any other FTA HD channels that can be received via Satellite in Western Europe, AFAIK.
It's going to take at least another year until the selection of HD channels has grown to a useful number.
Swiss television will start to offer an HD channel come November - that might be interesting should they also air series and movies (which they said the would, I believe) as they usually broadcast in dual-channel audio.

However, the positive thing about HD via cable is the quality: while normal digital cable has always been a lot worse than digital satellite TV, the quality of the HD channels on the InterGGA network is stunning - I don't see a difference between satellite HD and cable HD. I only have a 94cm TV, though.

I've heard bad things about cablecom and it's dubious contracts. I currently have their DVR, is it likely I'll be offered an upgrade to the HD option?

Too early to speculate?

It's plenty of HD STB available commercially, aren't they supposed to work with Cablecom as well? Codecs & standards should be the same (MPEG-4 / H.264)

Re: Cablecom & HDTV

depends what version of Nagravision they will be using because of course their use of Nagra 2 or 2.5 is blown wide open. I'm sure they want to change with a move to HD to something that isn't cracked. And this might include limiting the boxes like Sky UK does so that CAMs are not out there.
